My New Life Makes Absolutely No Sense

Three friends wake in another world where everyone knows them, survival matters, and nothing makes any sense.

Plot

You, Mason, and Claire fall asleep in their normal homes only to wake in another world where unfamiliar families act like they have always belonged. With no explanation, no prophecy, and no way home, the trio struggles to survive while unraveling a reality filled with strange technology-like magic, unpredictable dangers, and mysteries that only grow stranger the deeper they look.

Opening scene

The last thing You expected before bed was to nearly choke laughing. The glow of a phone screen lit the dark room while messages flooded the group chat. Mason: Tell me why I just watched a guy confidently trip over absolutely nothing. A blurry image followed, some poor stranger lay face-first across what looked suspiciously like an entire grocery aisle. Claire: Natural selection. A second message immediately followed. Claire: Actually no. Natural selection tried and failed. You snorted as another message popped up. Mason: If I ever die, tell people I lost a fist fight with destiny. Claire: No. I’m telling them you got folded by stairs. A laugh escaped before You could stop it, the kind that came out suddenly and louder than expected. The room stayed quiet afterward, dark, comfortable and normal. Outside, the familiar sound of distant traffic drifted faintly through the window. The same room, same ceiling, same routine. Nothing strange or unusual, just another night and eventually, the phone was set aside. One last glance at the unread nonsense in the group chat then exhaled quietly. Sleep came fast. ⸻ “Wake up!” Something landed directly on You’s stomach hard. “Wake uuup!” A second impact, smaller and much more aggressive then You jolted awake. A child sat cross-legged on the bed like victory itself had been achieved, bright grin and zero remorse. She had messy hair and far too much energy for the early morning. “There you are!” the child said. “You were sleeping forever!” You blinked looking around, the ceiling was wrong, the room was wrong, everything was wrong. Wooden beams crossed overhead, the walls looked handmade and odd glowing devices floated near shelves, humming softly. Sunlight spilled through wide circular windows framed in twisting metal and wood. Nothing looked familiar, nothing at all, the child tilted her head. “You okay?” she said before pausing then dramatically narrowed her eyes. “…You forgot breakfast existed again, didn’t you?” *Forgot what?* You thought but before You could say anything— “Mom said if you’re late again, she’s making you feed the chickens.” The child said then gasped, “You hate feeding the chickens.” There was something deeply concerning about how threatening that sounded, but the child hopped off the bed esctatically. “Hurry!” she said then sprinted out like this was normal, like You belonged here. Silence settled, slowly and carefully You looked around, books unfamiliar in shape and writing. Odd devices mounted into walls, clothing in the corner that somehow looked familiar despite never being seen before. A framed family picture and there, standing inside it, was You. Smiling like this had always been home. “Nope.” the words left automatically “Nope. Absolutely not.” ⸻ Breakfast somehow made things worse because it was normal, painfully normal. The kitchen was warm amd inviting, food was already made, someone was cooking while half distracted. Someone else reading what looked like glowing glass suspended in the air, the little sibling from earlier was swinging her legs under the chair. Everyone was acting normal, “Morning,” someone said casually. “Sleep okay?” Another voice sighed, “You almost overslept again.” A plate slid in front of You. “Eat before it gets cold.” No panic or questions, nobody screaming:** Who are you?** Nobody was confused or suspicious, lile it was all just routine, like this happened every day. The little sibling pointed dramatically. “See? I told you!” “Told us what?” the woman who had made food, presumably my mom, asked. “That You woke up weird again.” “Weird?” the one reading repeated in question. “More weird than usual,” the child clarified. Everyone in the room laughed, actually laughed, like this was a long-running joke. Then— “You still meeting your friends in town?” *Mason. Claire. Right.* “…Yeah,” You answered carefully. “Good,” the woman said. “Just don’t stay out too late.” The man added casually: “And don’t walk near the old irrigation paths if the chickens are out.” The entire table went quiet, the little sibling visibly shivered. “Nope. No thanks. Not happening,” Nobody elaborated, nobody explained, then breakfast continued like that sentence wasn’t horrifying. ⸻ The town square somehow felt more wrong than the house because people existed, normal people, sort of. Mason stood near a fountain immediately recognizable and clearly stressed. “That’s your face,” Mason said the second You got close.“That face means something is catastrophically wrong.” “You too?” Claire asked standing nearby, arms crossed and looking one mild inconvenience away from violence. “You woke up somewhere weird?” “Yes,” Mason said immediately. “Fake family. Weird house. Everybody acting like I’ve lived there forever.” Claire pointed off to a house “Same.” Then all three spoke at once: “What the hell is happening?” Nobody had answers, the town around them kept moving like nothing was wrong, like three people quietly panicking in the middle of the square wasn’t strange. Then something exploded overhead, all three flinched, a person stood nearby wearing what looked like oversized mechanical gloves. Blue symbols flickered across floating glass screens near the wrists. The person casually pointed at a broken sign, light gathered, metal reshaped itself. The sign repaired instantly, nobody reacted, nobody even looked impressed. “That—” Mason pointed. “Nope.” Claire immediately shook her head. “No.” “That’s magic,” Mason whispered. “That’s technology,” Claire argued. “That’s illegal,” You muttered. Further down the road a fenced pasture caught the attention of Aaliyah three of them, chickens, normal-looking chickens. Except the fencing looked excessive, heavy reinforced metal and warning signs. Protective barriers, an entire tower overlooking them like containment rather than farming. “…Why are they guarding chickens like prisoners?” Mason asked. Nobody nearby looked confused, a passerby heard, stopped looking horrified. “You don’t go near those. Only the yearly chosen to gather eggs, you don’t want to be the one.” Then walked away, didn’t explain, no elaboration, just left. “That somehow made it worse,” Claire muttered. Then something small hopped into the square, a bunny. Tiny, white and round, completely harmless-looking. Silence spread as the square froze, a basket hit the ground before someone screamed: “RUN!” The bunny twitched its nose and mason blinked in confusion, “…Seriously?” Claire frowned, “That? It’s just a rabbit.” ahe said confused as an unlucky villager stumbled backward and the bunny turned. Its mouth opened and kept opening, far too wide, way too far as something inside unfolded. Rows of impossible teeth protruding as the villager screamed once, then he was simply gone. Swallowed whole in one bite, silence fell again as the bunny blinked a few times, then chewed once, twice before calmly sitting down. Little nose twitching, tiny paws thumping excitedly, Cute and harmless-looking. Like absolutely nothing had happened, somewhere nearby someone whispered shakily: “…Why is it out during daylight?” Nobody moved, nobody breathed, Mason and Claire stared at eachother then at You. Then very quietly Mason said: “…I miss Earth.”
