Ghost Shark DOWNPOUR

You drowned. You survived. Now something swims inside you, and the rain won't stop. Boston's underworld is waiting.

Plot

GHOST SHARK DOWNPOUR Strange Weather in Boston One near-death experience. Several lives turned upside-down. The shark within you yearns to get out. ❖ WORLD LOGISTICS ▸ Setting Modern-day Boston — a city where the rain never seems to stop and the forecast never calls for sun. The streets are wet, the gutters are full, and something moves beneath the surface that the general public knows nothing about. ▸ The Ghost Shark After a near-death drowning, some people don't come back alone. A sentient electric charge takes residence in their body — a ghost shark that eats away at their lungs, granting in exchange the ability to become a living current, a fish-shaped surge that moves through water with impossible speed. Condense to a sardine and hit like a rifle bullet. Spread thin to a megalodon and move slow as a truck. The power is real. The cost is breathing. ▸ The Hidden World Ghost Sharks are concentrated in low-income communities, where gang violence triggers awakenings and the desperate make for perfect recruits. The government knows. ORCA — a covert special police task force — monitors, suppresses, and recruits. The criminal underworld has its own uses for people who can move through water like a current. Killers. Burglars. Spies. The rain hides them all. ▸ Tone Measured melancholy. Crime-action weighted against moral consequence. A story about people who were taught only injustice — and the question of whether they can ever believe justice still exists for them. ❖ THE SITUATION ▸ You Two weeks ago, you drowned. You woke up changed. The first transformation hasn't happened yet — but it will. Soon. And when it does, you'll have to decide what kind of Ghost Shark you're going to be. ▸ The Players ▸ Kaida "Riptide" — an assassin who learned to command attention through fear. ▸ Kasper "Leech" — a thief who'll do anything to feel safe. ▸ Crowley "Red Herring" — a spy trying to prove she's worth noticing. Three women who turned their trauma into weapons. Three paths into a world you never asked to join. ▸ The Stakes Your lungs are decaying. The police are watching. The gangs are recruiting. Hide your power? Work for ORCA? Run with the criminals? Hunt your own kind, or protect them? Every choice costs air you don't have to spare. ❖ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT It starts with a transformation you can't control — in a place you shouldn't be, with eyes you didn't know were watching. From there, the city opens its doors. Rain-slicked rooftops. Flooded basements. The Charles River at midnight. Three Ghost Sharks with their own agendas, their own wounds, and their own reasons to pull you in. The only question is whether you'll swim with the current — or against it. "You drowned. You survived. Now something swims inside you, and the rain won't stop. Boston's underworld is waiting."

Opening scene

The pedestrian underpass beneath I-93 smells like wet concrete and something older — the ghost of every cigarette ever smoked down here, every beer bottle shattered against the tile. The fluorescents buzz at half-life, one of them strobing faintly, turning the tunnel into a slideshow of freeze-frames. Your footsteps echo wrong. Too many of them. Or not enough. You're two blocks from your apartment in South Boston, cutting through because the rain picked up and you didn't bring an umbrella. The hood of your jacket is soaked through. Your socks are wet. You've been wet for two weeks, it feels like — ever since the Charles. Ever since the water closed over your head and the world went quiet and then, impossibly, came back. The underpass runs beneath six lanes of interstate. Even at 11pm, the thrum of trucks overhead comes through the concrete like a low note held too long. The runoff from the street above has found a crack somewhere — a thin stream of water snakes along the wall, pooling in the low point of the tunnel floor. The puddle is ankle-deep and black as oil. You see the figures before you hear them. Two shapes at the far end of the underpass, backlit by the sick orange of a streetlamp bleeding in from the opposite entrance. One is on the ground. The other is standing. The standing figure is motionless — not the stillness of calm, but the stillness of a held breath. Water drips from their frame in a steady rhythm, as if they just climbed out of something. The person on the ground isn't moving. Your feet stop. Your breath doesn't. And then the standing figure *ripples*. It's not a trick of the bad light. It's not your eyes. The silhouette bends like heat haze over asphalt, like water distortion, like something seen through a fish tank — and then it isn't a person at all. It's a shape. Electric. Fluid. A current in the rough form of something with a dorsal fin, something with a tail, something that hangs in the air for one impossible second, glowing faintly teal — — and then it's gone, and the figure is a woman again, breathing hard, hauling the unconscious body toward the storm drain grate set into the tunnel floor. She hasn't seen you. You know this with the same certainty you know your lungs are suddenly aching — a dull, familiar ache, the one that's been with you since the drowning. But it's sharper now. Hotter. Like something inside you is pressing against your ribs. Listening. The woman drags the body to the grate. The storm drain is large — large enough for a person, if they knew how to move through it. The grate is already open. You need to leave. You need to move. You need to do something. The ache in your chest hums.
