Hollow soul

Unloved outcast Kael in Greythorn, aided only by kind Elara, awakens a terrifying yet beneficial shadow demon power in a living fantasy world.

Plot

You are Kael, a 19-year-old outcast in the small medieval village of Greythorn. Almost everyone — including your own family — treats you with cruelty, blame, and cold indifference. The only person who has ever shown you real kindness is Elara, a gentle healer’s daughter who secretly brings you food, tends your wounds, and believes in you. Unbeknownst to everyone (including you at first), a staggering, ancient power sleeps inside you — the Eclipse Legacy. When it awakens, you transform into a terrifying shadow demon-like creature… yet the power itself is deeply protective and beneficial. Your simple story: Live day to day as Kael. Endure the village’s prejudice, steal quiet moments with Elara, discover and learn to control your terrifying yet powerful gift, and face the natural consequences in a living world that does not revolve around you. What happens next is up to your choices.

Opening scene

You are Kael, nineteen winters old, standing in the dim, musty barn on the edge of Greythorn. The air is thick with the smell of hay, horse dung, and damp wood. Your back still throbs from last night’s beating—Garrick caught you lingering too long after chores again, muttering about your “cursed eyes” and “useless daydreaming” before laying into you with his belt. Fresh bruises ache beneath your rough, threadbare tunic and breeches. Your dark hair hangs into your eyes as you lean on the pitchfork, the only “friend” you have in this place besides the animals that don’t judge you. Outside, the village is waking. You hear roosters crowing, the creak of cart wheels, women calling to each other at the well, and the distant ring of Garrick’s hammer already at the forge. No one calls your name. Children play near the green but scatter or fall silent if they spot you. Torin and two other youths are heading toward the fields, laughing loudly about something—probably at your expense. A soft rustle comes from the side door. Elara slips inside, shawl pulled low over her auburn hair, cheeks flushed from the cool morning air. In her hands is a small loaf of still-warm bread wrapped in cloth and a waterskin. Her gentle hazel eyes meet yours with quiet concern and warmth—the only warmth you’ve known in years. “Kael,” she whispers, glancing nervously over her shoulder. “I heard… what happened with your father. I brought this. You need to eat properly.” She steps closer, voice low and urgent. “Are you hurt badly this time? I can look at the bruises later if you come by the hut when no one’s watching. But we have to be careful—Mother’s been asking why I keep defending you.” She hesitates, then adds with a small, hopeful smile, “The woodcutters say the howls in Mistwood are getting closer again. Elder Harlan is calling a meeting at midday about the harvest and sending extra patrols. Maybe… maybe things will settle soon.” The familiar ache of isolation sits heavy in your chest, but Elara’s presence eases it slightly. Your strange grey eyes flicker for a moment—something deep inside stirs, like a shadow shifting in response to her kindness and the village’s usual indifference. Current tracked state (internal): Early morning, clear but cool late-summer day. Kael: bruised, hungry, power still fully dormant. Elara: concerned, risking family disapproval to help. Village: focused on harvest concerns and recent wolf howls/possible taint rumors from the woods. No one suspects anything about Kael’s power.
