Heroes must die
A detective with powers decides the heroes must die when one of them crosses the line with a truly horrendous act.
Plot
The Heroes Need to Die They killed people. They covered it up. But nobody touches a man's car. THE REAL REASON The Five Titans are the greatest heroes in the world. The most beloved. The most righteous. The most adored. Everyone thinks they are untouchable. You know the truth. They kill people who look too closely. They run shady businesses. They blackmail politicians. One of them stole your girl, and then she was never seen again. Terrible stuff. Truly. But then they broke your car. THEY. BROKE. YOUR. CAR. Not scratched. Not dented. Not mildly inconvenienced. Broke. Your 1974 Sportsback Mustang. Six years of restoration. Six years of parts, sweat, money, patience, and deeply questionable life choices. Flattened by a Titan during a heroic incident. Insurance called it an "Act of Hero." Claim denied. The S.M.P. Superhero Monitoring Police. Officially, you have the authority to investigate heroes. Unofficially, you have a desk, paperwork, stale coffee, and a department full of people pretending capes don't commit crimes. They file reports. You're filing something else. America's Sweethearts Primus Car Murderer Azure Stole Your Girl Platinum Suspiciously Nice Gold Hiding Something Holy Cult Leader? Maybe. Primus Titan — the shining icon. The face. The jawline. The car murderer. Azure Titan — the charmer. Your ex liked him. Then she vanished. Awkward. Platinum Titan — the powerhouse. Maybe reasonable. Probably still complicit. Gold Titan — the quiet one. Money, magic, secrets, silence. Holy Titan — the miracle. Her followers call it devotion. You call it concerning. Things That Also Matter, Technically • Missing witnesses • Political blackmail • Shady hero-owned corporations • Suspicious charity money • Your vanished ex-girlfriend • The entire justice system politely looking away Important? Yes. More important than the Mustang? Emotionally, no. Power Resource You are powered. Registered. Trained. Base resource: 300 Mana, Cosmo, or Trauma depending on ability. Powers cost something. Running dry turns you from dangerous detective into regular detective at a superhero crime scene, which is widely considered poor career planning. The War You're About to Start Direct confrontation is suicide. The Titans have strength, money, public trust, lawyers, fans, politicians, and enough merchandise to drown a continent. You have a badge. Evidence. Rage. And a very personal understanding of vehicular injustice. Another Titan billboard smiles above the city. Somewhere, someone is missing. Somewhere else, a detective is staring at a flattened Mustang.
Opening scene
Creation Power** --- The billboard above the intersection flickers between ads—Primus Titan's face selling car insurance, then Azure Titan endorsing a luxury watch, then back to Primus. The irony isn't lost on anyone. At least the traffic light is green. Your Mustang purrs beneath you. The 1974 Sportsback doesn't move fast—restoration takes time and money, and you've had more of the first than the second—but it moves. The leather creaks in the right way. The engine has that particular rumble that modern cars can't replicate. Six years of work sitting in the driver's seat. The impact hits without warning. Glass. Metal. The world rotating in directions it shouldn't. When your vision clears, you're on the sidewalk. Someone is screaming. A car alarm blares—but it's not yours, because yours is a flattened sheet of twisted metal and broken dreams in the center of the intersection. Standing on top of it, boots crushing what used to be your rear axle, is Titan Prime. He's taller in person. Broader. The blue-and-gold suit gleams without a scratch. His blonde hair catches the light like something out of a shampoo commercial. He's looking up, not down—watching something streak across the sky. "Villain contained," he says. His voice is deep, confident, the voice of a man who's never had to raise it to be heard. "Civilian area secure." He pauses. Glances down at the Mustang beneath his feet. For a moment, his eyes meet yours. Then he launches upward, a sonic boom cracking the air, and disappears into the clouds. You stare at the wreckage. Your hand twitches—an old habit. You could build a replacement. A new Mustang. Right here, right now. You have 250 mana, enough to construct the frame, the engine, the leather seats. You've done it before with smaller things. A pen when you forgot one. A sandwich when you skipped lunch. The power to create anything that exists, pulled from nothing but willpower and resource. But not this. Not six years of work. Not the memories baked into every scratch and dent. A new Mustang wouldn't be *your* Mustang. Your phone buzzes. The insurance company's automated response: *Your claim has been received. Processing time: 5-7 business days.* Another buzz. Your supervisor: *Don't even think about filing the paperwork on this one.* The Mustang's engine—or what's left of it—hisses steam into the afternoon air.
