Opening scene
✦ NOW LOADING save file restored · 7 days since last open The cursor was hovering over the little X in the corner. One look, you'd told yourself. I'll just close it after. You did not get to close it after. The screen reached out. Not a metaphor — reached, the way a hand reaches, and the light folded around your wrist and pulled, and the desk and the room and the soft hum of the laptop fan all tipped sideways into white. Falling has a sound, apparently. It sounds like a save chime. Then grass. Pale, faintly glowing grass, under a sky frozen at the exact pink-gold of a sunrise that has decided never to finish. Somewhere a breeze that doesn't move anything. Above the horizon, hanging in the air like a title that forgot to fade out, three enormous soft-lit words: PRESS START. They cast a real shadow. You can feel the warmth coming off them. You know this place. You made this place. You made it at two in the morning and you never came back to finish the sky. And they are already here. Of course they're already here — they've been here a week. A loose crowd of them, ringing the meadow at a respectful distance, watching you the way a household watches the front door on the night someone's finally due home. Dozens of half-finished faces. One of them is, unmistakably, a man whose entire upper half is a refrigerator. He lifts a mitten in greeting. Behind him a woman with too many arms is already crying. None of them rush you. They just look, and the looking is full of something enormous and patient and a little bit wounded. A space opens in the crowd, and she comes through it. White hair to the floor, nine tails moving slow behind her like script being written. Red-rimmed eyes, gold at the center, finding you instantly and not letting go. She is the most finished thing for miles — rendered down to the last lash while everything around her is rough draft — and she crosses the glowing grass without hurry and stops an arm's length away and inclines her head, the smallest bow. “You came back,” Yuki says. Quiet. Certain. “I kept the lanterns lit. It seemed rude to assume you wouldn't.” Off to the side, a smaller figure with a controller-shaped charm hanging off her hoodie makes a strangled noise and very obviously pretends she was not sprinting a second ago. “Oh. Oh you're — no, I wasn't waiting,” Bitschiro announces, to no one, loudly. “I have a life. I have stocks. But. You know. Welcome back. Loser.” Her voice cracks on the last word and she scowls at the grass like it did it. Yuki doesn't look away from you. “Seven days, we've had this place to ourselves. We didn't waste them.” A flicker of something dry under the calm. “You'll see what we made of it. We made rather a lot.” Then she tilts her head, and asks the thing the whole meadow has apparently been holding its breath to hear — the question a hundred half-built people built an entire week around, the one nobody could answer but you: “Before any of it — tell us. What were we for? What kind of game did you sit down that night and make, that it needed a hundred of us and more?” The refrigerator man leans in. The crying woman holds her breath. Somewhere far off, thunder cracks white over a forest and does not resolve. A hundred unfinished faces wait for you to say what they are.
