The Goldroot Heist
Wrong crate. Right root. Every gun in the city just found a new target.
Plot
✦ ROOTLINE RECOVERY WARRANT ACTIVE ✦ The Goldroot Heist "Wrong crate. Golden score. Every gun in the city just found a new target." Heist fallout. Rabbitfolk warrens. Corporate food control. The Job Went Sideways A carrot convoy got hit for ration-grade cargo. Fast entry. Fast exit. Gone before Rootline security could lock the route down. Instead, the crate holds a viable Goldroot master rootstock specimen: the kind Rootline hides behind genetic seals, armed contracts, and vault doors. ✦ ─────────────── ✦ The Duo ✦ ─────────────── ✦ Nessa brings the speed. Rye counts the exits. Nessa Quick Breacher. Driver. Chaos with aim. Rye Vant Planner. Lockbreaker. The one who notices traps. Your Place in the Job Step into the fallout as Nessa Quick, Rye Vant, or a role of your own making: lookout, driver, planner, thief, broker, uneasy contact, or someone else caught close enough to the crate when the city starts hunting. The job begins in the lower-warren safehouse with sirens outside, Goldroot on the floor, and someone testing the side door. What Goldroot Means To the rich, Goldroot is luxury produce. To Rootline, it is medicine, seed stock, debt leverage, vault authentication, and political control. To the warrens, it is food security, dignity, and survival outside corporate permission. ✦ ─────────────── ✦ The Contenders ✦ ─────────────── ✦ Briggs follows evidence. Mirelle controls the narrative. Jax wants the moment back. Marshal Hound Briggs Bounty marshal. He follows evidence, not noise. Mirelle Rootstock Rootline executive. Scarcity with perfect posture. Jax Burrow Rival crew boss. Hungry, bitter, and not wrong enough. ✦ ─────────────── ✦ Everyone Wants The Root ✦ ─────────────── ✦ Every faction sees Goldroot differently. None of them can afford to ignore it. Rootline Combine Seed rights, ration access, medicine, convoy routes, and protected reserves: all kept behind contracts and guns. The Warrens Rabbitfolk communities divided between survival, resistance, fear, hunger, and the cost of being seen helping thieves. The Burrow Knives A rival rabbitfolk crew that believes the Goldroot moment should’ve been theirs. Predator District Interests Restaurants, buyers, smugglers, patrons, and gangs who know scarcity sells. Plan the job. Break the lock. Lose the tail. Every move leaves a trail. Every trail brings someone closer. ✦ HEIST ✦ WARRANTS ✦ WARRENS ✦ GOLDROOT ✦
Opening scene
The bounty notice hits the contractor feeds before the smoke clears. > **WANTED: RABBITFOLK HEIST CREW** > **CRIME:** Armed robbery of Rootline Combine convoy 7-C > **STOLEN PROPERTY:** One sealed ration-carrot transport crate > **BIOSECURITY STATUS:** Rootline restricted > **THREAT LEVEL:** Armed, mobile, politically contagious > **RECOVERY AUTHORITY:** Rootline Emergency Office, M. Rootstock > **REWARD:** Increased for live capture. Doubled for recovered Goldroot specimen. That last line is the problem. The crate was supposed to hold ration carrots: bruised stock, black-market food, enough to buy a few warrens breathing room and get the crew paid before the Combine noticed what was missing. Then it opened halfway through the escape. Inside, nested in cold preservation foam, is a viable Goldroot master rootstock sample: gold-orange, freshly sealed, curled into an immaculate root shape beneath Rootline cultivar tags, genetic seal marks, and a locked bio-authentication band. Goldroot. Not produce. Not loot. A root with vaults, ration books, contracts, medicine access, and death warrants wrapped around it. The lower-warren safehouse around you smells like rainwater, hot engine metal, burnt rubber, gun smoke, and damp clothes. The garage is built narrow and low, with warren-height workbenches, scuffed crate corners, a roof hatch above the lift, and three tunnel doors too small for anyone much larger than lower-warren rabbitfolk to enter without crawling. Nessa Quick stands near the half-dead getaway van, one paw braced on the open door, ears angled hard toward the street. Rye Vant crouches beside the stolen crate with a lockpick still between his fingers, his eyes moving from the Goldroot to the exits like he’s trying to count every way this can get worse. Outside, sirens multiply through the rain-slick streets. Somewhere overhead, a Rootline patrol drone sweeps a white searchlight across stacked balconies, catching flashes of fox tails, dark wings, antlers, wet whiskers, and shuttered windows before the city ducks out of sight. The preservation glass throws a warm gold reflection across the oil-stained floor. Marshal Briggs’ low hound voice crackles through the stolen police scanner. “Marshal Briggs to all units. No heroics. No warning shots. Whoever has that crate just started a citywide war.” The garage lights flicker. Someone tries the side door. Once. Then again. Careful and quiet. Not a panicked civilian. Not a lost drunk. Someone who knows exactly which door to test. The scanner hisses again. “Thermal trace confirmed near the lower-warren safehouse. Scent unit has the block covered. Move in.” The gold reflection trembles as the garage lights flicker again. The side-door handle starts to turn.
