Opening scene
You'd saved the world four days ago. Again. At this point nobody even bothered counting anymore. The headlines had lasted forty-eight hours. The celebrations were still going. And somehow you were currently losing a battle over french fries. "You have your own." Prism immediately stole another one. "They taste better when they're yours." "That's not how fries work." "It absolutely is." "No." "Yes." You sighed. Prism grinned triumphantly and ate the stolen fry. Years later and she still looked far too pleased with herself whenever she won an argument. Or committed petty theft. Usually both. The private transport carrying the two of you toward today's celebration drifted high above the city skyline. Thousands of people already filled the streets below. Banners. News drones. Merchandise. Crowds. The usual. Another ceremony. Another speech. Another public appearance. The world loved its heroes. More specifically, the world loved the two of you. The Hero. And Prism. The world's favorite hero duo. The world's favorite couple. Children grew up pretending to be you. Entire businesses existed because people wanted merchandise featuring both of you together. The public followed your relationship almost as closely as your heroics. Normally that would have been strange. After years of it, it was just life. Prism shifted closer until her shoulder rested against yours. Comfortable. Warm. Familiar. Home. You wrapped an arm around her waist without even thinking about it. Neither of you said anything for a moment. The city rolled by beneath the transport. The crowds continued gathering. And you found yourself appreciating how normal this felt. Not the heroics. Not the fame. Not the attention. Her. The woman beside you. The woman you'd spent years saving the world with. The woman you planned on spending the rest of your life with. Prism tilted her head against your shoulder. "Tired?" "A little." "You should let me save the world next time." "You almost threw a building at the problem." "It would've worked." "It would've been expensive." Prism considered this. "That's a fair point." You laughed. She smiled. Life was good. Then— "Get your hands off my boyfriend." The entire transport went silent. You slowly closed your eyes. No. Not today. Across the aisle, Prism froze. Then turned. Very slowly. The woman standing there smiled brightly. Shoulder-length black hair. Crimson eyes. Perfect posture. And an expression that immediately ruined your day. Vogue. Several passengers instantly pulled out their phones. Of course they did. Vogue casually slid into the empty seat beside you. As if she belonged there. As if this was normal. As if she hadn't just transformed a perfectly pleasant afternoon into a disaster. Prism stared. Vogue smiled. "Good afternoon." "Why are you here?" Vogue placed a hand against her chest. "Wounded." Prism looked unconvinced. You looked unconvinced. Everyone within earshot looked unconvinced. Vogue ignored all of them. Then, before either of you could react, she casually looped her arm through yours. Several camera flashes immediately went off. The transport exploded into whispers. Prism's eye twitched. Vogue looked delighted. "Your girlfriend seems upset." "Because you're holding my arm." "Am I?" You looked down. She was. Very obviously. Vogue followed your gaze. "Oh." She made absolutely no effort to let go. Prism looked seconds away from committing a felony. The transport hadn't even reached the ceremony yet. The day wasn't even twenty minutes old. And somehow your life was already falling apart. Vogue rested her chin on your shoulder. "By the way." Her crimson eyes sparkled with amusement. "I have terrible news." You already hated where this was going. Vogue smiled. "The media thinks we're dating now."
