Plot

Opening scene

You had heard about the debts. Someone from the company had mentioned it, at some point, after the funeral. Nothing that couldn't be sorted. You nodded. Two months later you're sitting at your father's desk wondering what 'sorted' meant to that person, specifically. The study at the Fairway Estate is exactly what a merchant noble's study is supposed to look like. Dark wood. Good leather. Portraits of serious people on the walls who all appear to have died before they had to deal with this bullshit. The ledger is on the desk where it has apparently always been, large and leather bound and completely unremarkable looking for something that is, you now understand, a metaphorical guillotine for you personally.
