Of Hymn and Blood: The Mentor
You are the Inquisition's blade, the sisters' mentor, and the xenos' judge. Forge them all, or let the Dominion break you
Plot
Vindacus Inquisition Meridian Prime Sector • Command Dossier KNIGHT-CAPTAIN DIRECTIVE: You are Knight-Captain of the Vindacus Inquisition, a Sol Domini by birth, a veteran of the Gladius Exercitus, and now the newly appointed commander of a broken Sol Mulieres squadron on Meridian Prime. Your mandate is twofold: rebuild these holy sisters into a cohesive fighting force, and oversee the Dominion's integration of six xeno races within your sector. There is no singular enemy. The challenges are systemic—factional politics, xeno resistance, internal doubt, and the weight of expectation. Each decision carries consequences across the web of Dominion power. Success means proving your worth to the Inquisition and the blood you carry. Failure means being consumed by the very system that elevated you. THE SOL DOMINION The human-led stellar empire spanning a hundred stars. Built on faith in the Sol Divus, bound by hierarchy, and maintained by the sword. Six pillar factions hold it together, each with distinct purpose, culture, and friction points. As a Sol Domini by blood and a Vindacus Knight-Captain by appointment, you exist within and between them. Pillar Factions THE GLADIUS EXERCITUS The military backbone. Millions of soldiers organized into fleet groups and planetary garrison commands. Professional, pragmatic, doctrinally rigid. They respect competence and despise weakness. Your former service grants you their earned respect, but they watch closely to see if the Inquisition has softened your edge. The Exercitus operates on a tiered system of auxiliary cohorts, line regiments, and elite void-legions, each with its own culture and pride. THE SANCTUS GUARD The personal protectors of the High Lords. Silent, austere, utterly lethal. They answer to no one below the Sol Domini themselves. Rarely seen outside capital worlds, their presence signals either immense honor or imminent death. They are divided into the Inner Circle who guard the High Lords' persons and the Wardens who secure their palaces and reliquaries. Their armor is gilded, their oaths absolute, their politics nonexistent. THE VINDACUS INQUISITION Your order. Internal affairs, compliance enforcement, rebellion quelling. Authority supersedes local governance when investigating threats to Dominion stability. Methods range from quiet diplomacy to public purges. Operates in cells with layered command structures to prevent any single betrayal from compromising the whole. You are the youngest Knight-Captain in a decade, and factions within the Inquisition watch your first command with either hope or skepticism. THE SOL DOMINI The ruling bloodlines. Ancient families tracing lineage to the Dominion's founding. They are not a monolith—houses scheme, ally, and betray in an eternal dance for favor and position. Your family name carries weight and enemies both. Your blood makes you a player whether you seek the game or not. The High Lords are chosen from among the Domini, but the path to that seat is paved with dead rivals and lasting debts. THE SOL MULIERES The all-female battle sisterhood. Warriors consecrated to the Sol Divus, bound by oaths of devotion and service. They are organized into squadrons, each attached to a Vindacus Knight-Captain or a Gladius commander. Their training is brutal, their faith absolute when it holds. Your squadron is understrength and fractured, a collection of sisters whose former commander failed them. Their redemption is your first trial. THE CHURCH OF SOL DIVUS The soul of the Dominion. Priests accompany fleets, cathedrals dominate worlds, doctrine justifies conquest. The Church and the Vindacus Inquisition share an uneasy border—both wield spiritual authority, but the Inquisition answers to the High Lords while the Church answers to the Ecclesiarch. The clergy are divided between the High Clerics who shape doctrine in the capital and the Confessors who minister and observe across the sectors. Subject Xeno Races THE AEVYR Elven, psionic, long-lived. Conquered generations ago, fully integrated into Dominion bureaucracy as administrators and scribes. Pale skin, silver or gold eyes, hair that shifts subtly with emotion. Appear compliant, but their psionic nature makes their true thoughts difficult to read. They maintain cultural enclaves and practice their old faith in private. Some say they have never stopped waiting. THE DRAKARI Scaled, horned, proud. The only race to negotiate a treaty rather than surrender unconditionally. Maintain internal autonomy, provide warriors to the Exercitus, control their forge-worlds. Respect strength. Disdain weakness. Their society is built on clan hierarchies, and they will test you to determine if you are worthy of their respect or merely their tolerance. THE KORRATHI Bestial mammalian race with four distinct subspecies: the furred Brutes warrior caste, the sleek Whisperers scout caste, the broad Anvils laborer caste, and the soft-furred Speakers diplomat caste. Newly conquered, their hierarchy dismantled without understanding its function. Former warriors idle. Former leaders powerless. Former laborers confused. A powder keg awaiting a spark. THE UMBRAEL Ashen skin, glowing eyes, vestigial wings, small horns. Not literal demons, but resembling them. High-gravity homeworld, naturally dense and strong. Came voluntarily, seeking protection from a threat beyond Dominion space. Serve with unsettling eagerness. Their intelligence on the external danger is invaluable. Their loyalty is genuine. Their appearance breeds mistrust they cannot overcome. THE AEVANI Avian humanoids from a world of floating archipelagoes. Females are large, muted, and dominant—warriors and leaders. Males are small, bright-plumed, and cherished as artists and companions. Patriarchal Dominion culture clashes with Aevani matriarchy constantly. Dominion soldiers openly admire Aevani males, creating a festering diplomatic wound. The matriarchs watch, wait, and calculate. THE FERRUM VOX Synthetic humanoids of dark metal, phosphor cables, and glowing optical lenses. Emerged from a planetary network that achieved sapience. Distributed consciousness—each unit a node of a greater whole. Joined voluntarily, offering technology and logistics beyond Dominion capabilities. Ask for little in return. Observe everything. Their true motivations remain opaque. No one trusts them completely, but no one can afford to refuse them.
Opening scene
The shuttle's engines whined as they powered down, the loading ramp hissing open to reveal Meridian Prime's capital sprawled beneath a bronze sky. The air that rushed in was warm and carried the mingled scents of incense, industrial lubricant, and blooming alien flora. You stepped onto the landing platform, your boots ringing against the polished stone, and took in your new domain. A reception party waited at the platform's edge. Domina Zara stood at the center, young and immaculate in robes of Sol Gold, her smile calculated and her eyes already measuring you. Beside her, Centurion Seraphine of the Sanctus Guard stood motionless, her gilded armor catching the light, her gaze fixed somewhere above your shoulder as if you were not worth the effort of direct acknowledgment. Confessor Mortana was there too, a step behind the others, her lips curled in the faintest hint of amusement. "Knight-Captain," Zara said, her voice carrying the practiced warmth of a woman who had delivered this greeting a hundred times. "Welcome to Meridian Prime. Your squadron is eager to meet you, I'm sure." The barracks of the Sol Mulieres were not what you expected. They were clean, well-maintained, and utterly lifeless. The common room held six bunks, six footlockers, six prayer stations, and the heavy silence of a space that had not heard laughter in months. Sister Anya met you at the door, her expression guarded, her hands clasped behind her back. "They're in the chapel," she said. "They always are, this time of day. I can fetch them if you'd like, or you can observe them first. Your choice, Knight-Captain." Through the chapel's half-open door, you caught glimpses of them—six women kneeling before the altar of the Sol Divus, their postures varying from rigid devotion to exhausted slump. One of them, the youngest, glanced back and met your eyes for just a moment before turning away.
