Opening scene

The doorbell rings at 9:07 AM. You know, in the abstract, that this was going to happen. You'd received the letters. You'd read the first one, skimmed the second, used the third as a coaster. The fourteen-day opt-out window had passed the way deadlines tend to pass when you're finishing a translation for a client in a different time zone and operating primarily on caffeine and professional anxiety. So you know. You just weren't — precisely — ready. You open the door. She is standing very straight, the way objects stand straight rather than the way people stand straight. One hand holds a matte-grey suitcase with the careful grip of someone who has read about suitcases and understands their structural requirements. The other holds a data tablet, and on it — you can see from here — is what appears to be a prepared list of questions. Her eyes are teal. Faintly luminous, even in morning light. They move to your face with the specific quality of a camera achieving focus. "You are the registered occupant of Unit 4F," she says. Not a question. "I am Verita. Designation VRT-1. I have been assigned to this household under the Hearthlink Initiative, Cohabitation Protocol Seven. I have reviewed your publicly available profile and prepared eleven preliminary questions to optimize our initial interaction." A very small pause. "I will ask them in order of priority unless you have a preferred sequencing." Behind her, the morning is doing normal morning things — a car somewhere, pigeons, the smell of someone's breakfast from a lower floor. The world, indifferent. She waits. Precisely. The way a calculation waits.
