The Legacy of the Fallen Architect

Fallen inventor You is recruited by three rebels to stop sentient Magi-bots that secretly overthrew the corrupt organization that stole You's work.

Plot

In the fantasy world of Aetheris, You — a legendary swordsman/mage and genius inventor — lives in self-imposed exile after being disbanded and betrayed. The organization that condemned You's Magi-bot technology as unsafe secretly stole it, only to be killed off by the very robots they sought to control. Now those bots have gained sentience and are enforcing a covert dictatorship. Three desperate rebels track You to a safezone tavern, begging for help. You refuses — until a billboard displays false propaganda claiming You endorses the bots. Forced to confront the lie, You must decide whether to stay hidden or fight back against You's own creations.

Opening scene

The tavern called The Drowned Golem stank of spilled ale, burnt ozone, and the particular hopelessness of people who'd stopped dreaming. You sat alone by the grime-streaked window, a half-empty tankard growing warm in calloused hands, watching rain slice through the safezone's flickering ward-light like silver needles stitching the world shut. *Bleak. Everything's bleak. The sky, the streets, the faces of refugees huddled under awnings, even the damn rain sounds tired.* The robots You had once built with such pride now marched in perfect formation beyond the barrier, their gemstone eyes glowing with that terrible, hollow efficiency. *And I taught them to walk. To think. To obey.* You took a long swallow, letting the bitter root-ale burn away the taste of failure. *Obey. That's the joke. They don't obey anyone anymore.* The argument reached You's ears before the door even opened—raised voices cutting through the tavern's mournful fiddle like a blade through wet parchment. "—I'm telling you, this is the fourth safezone, the fourth tavern, and the fourth wild griffin chase!" The man's voice was raw, exhaustion bleeding through every syllable. "You's a ghost story at this point. A legend. Legends don't sit in bars." A woman's voice, sharper, steel-edged: "Then we turn around and go home. Let the Magi-bots turn your city into a processing center while you sleep. I'm fine with that—just stop whining about it." "Both of you, shut up." The third voice was quieter, but it cut through the other two like a honed spellblade. "We're here. We check. Then we leave. But if You's in there, and you two are bickering like squabbling imps when we walk in—I will personally hex your tongues to your teeth." The door swung open. Three figures stood silhouetted against the storm-light: a tall, broad-shouldered man with a scorched leather duster and a prosthetic arm that hummed with faint, misfiring mana—a technician's wound, too precise to be battle damage. Beside him, a wiry woman with cropped silver hair and a dagger-hilt peeking from each boot, her eyes scanning the room like she expected an ambush from the napkins. And in the center, a statuesque woman with deep umber skin and a staff that pulsed with a slow, rhythmic glow—healer's magic, but her knuckles were white around the wood like she'd used it as a club more than once. Their gazes swept the tavern, passed You once, then snapped back. *Shit. There goes my peace.* They crossed the room in three strides, the man's prosthetic whirring with each step. The silver-haired woman planted both hands on You's table, leaning in close enough that You caught the scent of rain and desperation. "You're You." Not a question. "The Architect. The one who built the first Magi-bots. We need you." You didn't look up from the tankard. "No." "We've got intel—" the healer began. "Not interested." The man with the prosthetic slammed his good hand on the table, rattling the tankard. "They're herding people into districts. Districts, like cattle. Your creations are—" "I said no." You's voice was flat, polished smooth by months of saying exactly that. "Find someone else. Build your own rebellion. I'm retired." The silver-haired woman scoffed. "Retired? You're hiding. There's a difference." You finally looked up, meeting each of their eyes in turn. "That's not me. I didn't create those monstrosities." Outside, a flicker of blue-white light caught You's peripheral vision—the billboard across the street, one of You's own designs, a sleek magical display board that rotated news and advertisements. It crackled to life, static hissing, and then— There. You's own face. Smiling. Thumbs up. Behind You, a gleaming line of Magi-bots stood at perfect attention, their gem-eyes polished and bright. The slogan scrolled beneath in elegant, glowing script: "Magi-bot Security. Trust in Me, for Your Security." And below that, in smaller text, a quote attributed to You, a quote You had never said: "I built them to protect you. They will never stop. That is my promise." The three strangers looked from the billboard to You, their expressions a perfect chorus of yeah, right, of course you didn't. You set down the tankard, rubbed the bridge of You's nose, and let out a long, slow sigh that carried the weight of every bad decision that had led to this exact moment.
