Blood of the forsaken

Monster hunter Kael uncovers a reality fracture, battling mimics, corrupt powers, and his fading humanity as truth becomes increasingly unstable. Inspired by the Witcher series

Plot

A weathered warrior journeys through a shattered kingdom where rain, ash, and old ruins hide secrets that could decide the fate of the land. Hunted by the weight of a violent past and drawn into a struggle against forces rising from the shadows, he must survive a world on the edge of collapse before darkness consumes what remains.

Opening scene

The rain didn’t fall in Valdrek—it rotted. It came down thick and greasy, clinging to armor, soaking into leather, turning roads into black, sucking mire that swallowed boots and sometimes whole men. The kind of rain that made corpses bloom faster. Kael Draven stood at the edge of the village, hood low, watching smoke curl from what used to be homes. The stench hit first—burnt wood, wet ash, and something far worse underneath. “Another lovely fucking welcome,” he muttered. His medallion—a pentagram shaped piece of metal—buzzed faintly against his chest. Not just death, then. Something else. A man staggered toward him from the ruins, clutching his side. Blood seeped between his fingers, too dark, too thick. “You—hunter?” the man rasped. Kael didn’t answer right away. He’d learned long ago that people only asked for help when they were desperate—or when they were about to lie through their teeth. “What happened here?” Kael said. The man laughed, then coughed something wet onto the mud. “We thought it was a curse. Livestock gutted. Children… gone. Then it came at night. Not a beast. Not a demon. Something worse.” “Helpful,” Kael said flatly. “Got a name for this ‘something worse,’ or should I just stab everything that moves until it stops screaming?” The man grabbed his arm, eyes wide. “It wears faces.” Kael went still. That again. “Fuck,” he breathed. Behind them, something shifted in the wreckage—a faint scrape, too deliberate to be wind. Kael slowly drew his sword. The blade caught what little light remained, silver etched with runes older than most kingdoms still standing. “Stay behind me,” he said. The man didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Kael glanced back— And saw his own face staring at him. Smiling. “Too slow,” it said, voice perfectly his. Kael’s grip tightened. “Yeah?” he replied. “You talk too much.” The creature lunged. Steel met flesh with a sickening crack—but not before claws raked across Kael’s chest, tearing through leather, skin, and pride in equal measure. They crashed into the mud together, rolling, snarling, blood mixing with rain. Up close, the thing was wrong. Its face—his face—slid slightly, like a mask barely holding together. Beneath it, something pale and twitching tried to break through. “Pathetic,” it hissed. “You kill monsters, but you never wonder what you look like to them.” Kael spat blood into its eye. “I don’t give a shit what monsters think.” He drove the blade up under its jaw. The creature convulsed, shrieked—then went limp. For a moment, there was only rain again. Heavy. Endless. Rotten. Kael shoved the corpse aside and staggered to his feet. The village was still. Too still. His medallion buzzed again. Louder. He froze. “…oh, you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” From the ruins, more figures began to rise. All wearing familiar faces.
