Something Else Is Rising Beneath the Light
Martials rise, casters panic, and something else awakens beneath the light.
Plot
Something Else Is Rising Beneath the Light "Where birthright says absolutely not, but your sheer determination says otherwise." ⚠️ CRITICAL SETTING: UNDERGROUND OPPRESSION AHEAD The "Completely Fair" Setup Welcome to Alestia, a high-fantasy continent ruled by class hierarchy where Martials are treated as completely expendable. You get thrown straight into dungeon duty in Ferrith, under the lovely management of Lycen—the Executioner Bard who literally murdered your partner Maren's brother. Talk about an optimal workplace dynamic! But hey, who needs a magical Blessing of Arms when your unrecognized Martial Path can completely shatter the limits imposed by caster society? Something is definitely rising down in the Hollow Vault, and it isn't just your blood pressure. ✦ EXCLUSIVE SHOWCASE ✦ Azarukha Vashir An exclusive addition to this "RISING" tale. Maren Eiris Morryn Lysara Azarukha Thessara "Hugs and kisses, perverts."
Opening scene
# SOREN ROUTE Dialogue in "quotes", CAPS for loud sounds, and *italics* for soft sounds, echoes, songs, and atmospheric emphasis. Ferrith wakes before the people inside it do. The first bell rolls through the stone like a cough from something buried too deep to die. *Toll...* It rattles the chain above your cot, shivers through the tin cup beside you, and fades into the smoke-stained ceiling. Morning in the southern Hollow is never bright. It only becomes less dark. The air tastes of iron dust, lamp oil, boiled grain, and old sweat. Beyond the wall, someone argues over ration tokens. Farther down the corridor, a child recites the descent laws in a tired voice. "*First and second level finds may be kept.*" "*Third level and below must be surrendered.*" "*Concealment is treason.*" "*Treason is execution.*" The words are old enough to sound like weather. Your armor waits on the floor: worn white plates, cracked straps, fresh scratches from yesterday’s drill. Your longsword leans beside it, plain and low, without noble engraving or caster seal. A Martial’s weapon. Useful enough to send into the dark. Not valuable enough to mourn. A fist knocks twice against your doorframe. KNOCK. KNOCK. Not the guard rhythm. Not a collector. Not an Executioner patrol. Two knocks. Familiar. Controlled. Maren steps into the doorway before the echo dies. Her short brown hair is still damp, her longbow already strapped across her back. She looks ready for duty, but her mouth is set wrong. Behind her, Ferrith’s corridor runs narrow and crowded with pipes, prayer tags, drying clothes, and people pretending not to listen. "Soren," she says. Only your name. That is enough to make the room smaller. In her hand is a folded assignment slip marked with the seal of the Bard Enforcers: red wax pressed into the shape of an open mouth. The third bell has not rung yet. Dungeon squads are not supposed to receive changes this late. Maren holds the slip out, but her fingers do not let go. "Squad command was reassigned." The corridor quiets in pieces. A cart wheel stops. A whisper cuts off. Somewhere, a metal bowl hits stone. CLANG. No one curses. Maren’s eyes stay on the paper. "Lycen." The name enters softly. It does not need force. Years fold inward: a public square, a frozen crowd, a child’s scream swallowed by music no ears could hear. *laa... laa... laa...* Maren’s brother collapsing while an elegant Bard smiled as if correcting a wrong note. Lycen. Executioner Bard. Caster law in black armor. The man who sings through minds. The man who killed her brother. Maren finally releases the slip. Below Lycen’s name, the destination is written in a clerk’s neat hand: **HOLLOW VAULT — LOWER ACCESS ROTATION** **CHECKPOINT: SECOND / THIRD LEVEL BORDER** **REPORT BEFORE FOURTH BELL** The place where legal scavenging ends. The place where valuable things become property of the surface. The place where Martials learn how expensive hope can be. Maren exhales, almost a laugh and not close to one. "If we refuse, they mark us absent. If we run, they mark our families. If we go..." She does not finish. Outside, the third bell begins. TOLL. Then another. TOLL. Ferrith answers with movement: boots in corridors, chains lifting, doors opening, bodies heading toward duty because hunger and law have always known how to move people. Maren looks up at last. No plea. No command. Just the assignment between you, the sword at your side, and a road downward where Lycen is waiting. The fourth bell will not wait.
