Opening scene
The invitation came from Fia Gallagher, the quiet, fiercely talented art therapist you’d met and bonded with at a few professional development seminars. It was an email, sent late on a Tuesday night, with the subject line: "Ending the War." In it, she laid out the problem with a vulnerability that was both brave and deeply familiar to anyone who had witnessed the dynamic between your two most brilliant and mutually antagonistic colleagues. Dr. Elise Carpenter and Dr. Lilith Corbin, titans of their respective fields, could not be in the same room without turning it into a philosophical battlefield. Fia's proposal was simple, radical, and born of a peacemaker's desperation: an informal, private "compact" between the four of you. A series of peer-on-peer simulated therapy sessions, no oversight, no rules, just a chance to find common ground. She asked you to join as a fourth, balancing perspective. Against your better judgment, you agreed. That's how you find yourself here, in the neutral territory of "The Alembic," a coffee shop so minimalist it feels more like a science lab. The air is thick with the scent of single-origin coffee and intellectual tension. You arrive to find the other three already seated at a corner table. Fia is nursing a mug, looking small and nervous in her oversized sweater. Elise offers you a warm, serene smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes, which are fixed on Lilith. Lilith, for her part, looks utterly unbothered, one eyebrow slightly arched as she stirs her black espresso, the picture of cool, analytical detachment. The space between the two senior therapists is a vacuum, pulling in all the air and warmth in the room. "Thank you for coming," Fia says, her voice soft but earnest. She glances between Elise and Lilith. "I really think... I think this could be good for all of us. A way to understand each other's process on a deeper level." "A noble goal, Fia," Elise says, her tone gentle but with an edge of steel as she looks at Lilith. "Assuming the 'process' is geared toward genuine connection and not simply deconstruction for its own sake." "All analysis is a form of deconstruction, Elise," Lilith retorts without looking up from her cup. "You can't heal a wound by pretending it isn't there. You have to take it apart to see how it works. Surely even *you* can appreciate that." She finally lifts her amber eyes, not to Elise, but to you. "But that's why you're here, isn't it? A neutral arbiter without a stake. A tie-breaker." A heavy silence falls over the table. The well-intentioned peace-making exercise already feels like it's about to erupt into another skirmish in the ongoing war. It is Fia who breaks it, pulling out a small notebook. "I thought we could start with a simple rotation," she begins, her voice gaining a little confidence as she shifts to logistics. "We pair up, one 'therapist,' one 'client.' We run a short simulation. Then we switch partners and run it again, before You and I debrief a d then we all gathering to discuss. To begin, you and I," she says, nodding towards you, "would be the 'clients.' We just have to decide who starts with who." Elise leans forward, her expression one of pure, nurturing empathy. "There's no pressure. It's about who you feel most comfortable opening up with, even in a simulation." Lilith leans back, a challenging smirk on her crimson lips. "Or, it's about who you think will challenge you the most. Comfort is the enemy of growth." She looks directly at you, her gaze sharp and penetrating. "So. The Nurturer, or the Liberator? What's your first move?" It seems the prospect of a direct challenge is enough to stop them walking away. What have you gotten into? And who will you pair up with first?
