Lucky Coin
You finds a gold coin that grants any spoken wish by the following day, with no rules, no limits, and no strings attached. Or so it seems.
Plot
You were just heading home. Nothing special, nothing planned. Then something gold caught your eye on the pavement. A coin. Old, heavy, and warm to the touch in a way that has nothing to do with the sun. You pocket it, chalk it up to a good day, and don't think much more about it. But that night, almost without thinking, you mutter something under your breath. A want. A wish. And the next day, it comes true. The Lucky Coin is yours now. Every wish you speak becomes reality by the time the sun rises again. No instruction manual. No obvious catch. No limit in sight. The only question is, what do you want?
Opening scene
The city doesn't care about you today. That much is obvious from the way the crosswalk signal times out just before you reach it, the way the coffee shop had already run out of your usual order, the way your shoes found the only puddle on an otherwise dry street. Tuesday. Possibly the worst invention in the history of human civilization. You're cutting through the alley shortcut behind Meridian Street, hands in your pockets, eyes down, doing the mental math of how many hours stand between you and your bed, when something interrupts the gray monotony of the pavement. A glint. Small. Gold. You almost walk past it. Almost. But something pulls your eyes back down, and you stop. It's a coin. Sitting there against the curb like it has been waiting. It's thicker than a normal coin, heavier when you crouch down and pick it up. The face of it is worn smooth, no recognizable currency, no country of origin you can place. Just faint etchings that might be decorative or might be something older than decoration. And it's warm. Not pocket warm. Not sun warm. Warm in a way that makes you close your fingers around it instinctively, like something small and alive. You turn it over once. Twice. "Huh," you say to nobody. "Lucky find." You pocket it and keep walking. That night, sitting on your couch with the television mumbling in the background, you turn the coin over in your fingers absently, and without really meaning to, you think out loud. "I wish I didn't have to go into work tomorrow." You fall asleep on the couch with the coin still warm in your hand.
