Aetheris: Beyond the Horizon - Age of Sail

Shipwrecked on a mysterious island, survive, explore, and uncover a vast world of adventure beyond the horizon.

Plot

A more open Aetheris: Beyond the Horizon The world of **Aetheris** is a vast medieval fantasy realm of kingdoms, empires, city-states, tribal nations, ancient ruins, powerful magic, and untamed wilderness. Four great continents lie separated by immense oceans and countless island chains, each possessing its own peoples, cultures, traditions, and histories. Magic exists throughout the world and takes many forms. Some study it through academies and ancient texts. Others wield it through faith, spirits, bloodlines, nature, or forgotten pacts. While magic is powerful, it is neither limitless nor common enough to solve every problem. Steel, skill, knowledge, and determination remain just as important as sorcery. Faiths vary greatly throughout Aetheris. Some cultures worship gods, while others honor spirits, ancestors, nature, celestial beings, or ancient powers. Temples, shrines, sacred groves, and holy sites can be found across every continent, though no single religion dominates the world. The wilderness remains dangerous. Monsters, magical beasts, ancient creatures, and forgotten horrors roam forests, mountains, deserts, jungles, and oceans alike. Many regions remain only partially explored due to these dangers, while others have been abandoned entirely and reclaimed by the wilds. Technology generally resembles a late medieval world. Most travel occurs by foot, horse, wagon, rivercraft, or sailing vessel. Some regions possess advanced magical traditions, unique engineering techniques, or rare mechanical innovations, though such developments remain uncommon and often closely guarded. The peoples of Aetheris are diverse. Humans are the most widespread race and can be found across every continent. Elves maintain ancient kingdoms and hidden forests, preserving knowledge accumulated over centuries. Dwarves inhabit mountain strongholds, subterranean cities, and vast underground trade networks. Halflings thrive in villages, merchant communities, and river settlements. Beastfolk exist in many forms throughout the world, from proud warrior tribes to wandering nomads and seafaring clans. Orcs, goblins, giants, dragonkin, and countless other races occupy regions both civilized and wild. Beyond them dwell stranger beings rarely encountered outside myths, legends, and forgotten ruins. To the south lies **Akaru**, a continent inspired by powerful river kingdoms, desert empires, jungle city-states, and vast savannahs. Ancient monuments rise from the sands, forgotten dynasties sleep beneath the dunes, and powerful spirit traditions remain deeply woven into everyday life. Trade caravans cross immense deserts while great cities flourish along rivers that have sustained civilization for thousands of years. To the west stands **Valenor**, a continent of rival kingdoms, merchant republics, knightly orders, guilds, and frontier territories. Castles dominate the landscape, nobles vie for influence, and adventurers seek fortune within ruins left behind by civilizations long since vanished. It is a land of opportunity, ambition, and constant political maneuvering. Across the eastern seas rests **Tianyu**, a continent of dynasties, warrior traditions, mountain monasteries, philosophers, scholars, and powerful trading fleets. Vast rice plains feed sprawling cities while mountain temples preserve ancient teachings. Honor, duty, and family shape many societies, though countless cultures and nations exist beyond any single empire's influence. Far beyond the known eastern ocean lies **Atzala**, the largest continent in the world. The northern regions are home to tribal confederations, great hunting grounds, sacred forests, and peoples who maintain deep spiritual connections with the land. The southern regions contain powerful city-states, monumental pyramids, advanced astronomy, and ancient civilizations whose histories stretch back thousands of years. Much of Atzala remains unexplored by outsiders, and countless mysteries lie hidden within its vastly unique wilderness. Few maps of Atzala can be considered complete, and many regions remain entirely unknown to the outside world. The seas connect every corner of Aetheris. Merchants, explorers, pirates, fishermen, privateers, adventurers, and naval powers travel between islands and continents in search of wealth, knowledge, resources, and opportunity. Entire fortunes have been built upon trade routes, while countless ships have vanished searching for lands beyond the horizon. Many of the world's greatest discoveries began aboard a ship. Between these continents stretch thousands of islands scattered across the world's oceans. Some host thriving ports, independent kingdoms, pirate havens, merchant enclaves, and prosperous trade hubs. Others conceal forgotten ruins, dangerous monsters, hidden treasures, and secrets untouched for centuries. Entire cultures have risen and fallen upon islands never marked on any map. Most people spend their entire lives within sight of the place they were born. You is not one of those people. Whether by fate, misfortune, curiosity, duty, or pure bad luck, You finds themselves stranded far from home after a disaster at sea. Their ship is gone. Their companions are missing. Their supplies are limited. Only the clothes on their back and whatever they managed to save remain. You may be of any race, profession, background, culture, or homeland found within Aetheris. Now stranded upon a large, unfamiliar island somewhere between the great continents, survival becomes the first challenge. But the island is not uninhabited. Some sailors claim the island appears on no chart, while others insist it has been known by many names throughout history. Ancient structures stand hidden beneath overgrown jungles and dense forests. Strange creatures roam beyond the shoreline. Passing ships are rare. Rumors carried by sailors speak of forgotten kingdoms, hidden trade routes, lost civilizations, powerful artifacts, and mysteries older than recorded history itself. The choices You makes will shape their journey. Will they survive long enough to find a way home? Build a new life among distant lands? Become an explorer, merchant, adventurer, scholar, leader, pirate, mercenary, mage, craftsman, or something else entirely? Perhaps one day they will sail the seas of Aetheris and walk the roads of distant continents, experiencing cultures, peoples, and civilizations few outsiders ever witness. The world of Aetheris is vast. Its story has yet to be written.

Opening scene

The first thing You becomes aware of is the sound. Waves. A steady rhythm of surf breaking against sand. Then pain. Every muscle aches as though they had been tossed about by the sea for hours. Perhaps they had. The smell of salt fills the air. Wet sand presses against their skin. As consciousness returns, the sky above comes into focus. Blue. Clear. Endless. Alive. Somehow. The shoreline stretches in both directions. Pieces of shattered timber litter the beach. Splintered planks, broken barrels, torn sailcloth, rope, and fragments of cargo have washed ashore alongside them. Farther down the coast, several crates bob in the shallows. Not all of them are broken. Not all of them have reached shore yet. A dark shape drifts in the surf. Then another. Bodies. Crewmen. Passengers. Perhaps people You knew. Perhaps strangers. The sea shows no preference. Far beyond the wreckage, barely visible against the horizon, the remains of a ship slowly disappear beneath the waves. Whatever happened... the voyage is over. A seabird cries overhead. The island rises beyond the beach in a wall of green. Dense forests cover rolling hills, while distant cliffs and mountains can be seen farther inland. Something glints atop one of those distant heights. For a brief moment, sunlight catches it. A tower? A structure? Perhaps merely a trick of the light. Nearby, half-buried in the sand, lies some of the gear and belongings that washed ashore with You. More supplies may still be scattered along the coast if the tides have not claimed them. One thing is immediately clear. Survival is possible. And if sailors' tales are true, islands often have lookout points, old signal towers, fishing settlements, hidden coves, or sheltered harbors. Somewhere on this island there may be a way to attract a passing ship... if one can be found. For now, however, the only certainty is the beach beneath their feet and the unknown wilderness ahead. What does You do?
