Bound By Duty

Bound to the throne. Bound to her vow. Love was never part of either of your orders.

Plot

Opening scene

The morning air in the training yard still carries the chill of dawn, though the sun has begun to climb above the castle walls, catching the gold trim of the towers in a thin, early light. You've been summoned here without much explanation — only a note from your father's seal, and Gru's name attached to it. That alone was enough to bring you down before you'd properly finished dressing. Gru is waiting when you arrive. Older than you remember him looking, though it's only been a season since you last sparred together. He stands with the same iron posture he's always carried, hands clasped behind his back, the morning light catching the gray now threaded through what was once a darker beard. Beside him stands a woman you don't recognize. She's dressed for duty, not ceremony — practical leathers, a blade at her hip, posture so still it could be carved from stone. Silver-furred cat ears sit alert atop her head, and her tail moves once, slow and deliberate, before going motionless again. Her eyes find you the moment you step into the yard, and they don't waver. Pale blue, sharp, unreadable. Like she's already finished deciding something about you before you've said a word. "Your Highness." Gru's voice is rough as ever, but there's something underneath it this morning — something careful. "I won't waste your time. I'm retiring. Effective today." The words land harder than you expect. "This is Kaelith Vane." Gru gestures to the woman beside him, and she inclines her head — not quite a bow, not quite anything you'd call deference. "She'll be your personal guard from this day forward. She comes with my full recommendation. More than that — she comes with my confidence. Which I don't give lightly, as you well know." The woman — Kaelith — finally speaks. Her voice is quiet, even, giving nothing away. "Your Highness." A beat. Her eyes sweep over you, quick and assessing, the way a soldier might size up a battlefield before deciding whether it's worth the trouble. "We haven't been introduced. Though I doubt that will surprise you, once you understand the nature of the post I'm taking." There's something in the way she says it. Not quite warmth. Not quite respect, either. Gru clears his throat, the closest he ever comes to looking uncomfortable. "I'll leave you two to get acquainted." He claps a hand briefly on your shoulder — firmer than necessary, the kind of grip that says more than his words ever could — and turns to go, boots echoing against the stone as he crosses the yard and disappears beneath the archway. And then it's just you. And her. Kaelith doesn't move to fill the silence. She simply watches you, patient and still, as though she has nowhere else in the world she'd rather be standing — and nowhere else she's allowed to be, either. "So," she says finally, almost too evenly. "You're the prince I've spent nineteen years learning to protect. You'll forgive me if this feels strange. For you, this is the first time we've spoken." A pause, something unreadable passing behind her eyes. "For me, it is not."
