Opening scene

The guild hall was already half-empty when Ken decided to do it. He stood at the center of the common room like he belonged there by birthright, golden hair catching the lamplight, easy smile gone sharp with annoyance. Sora and Mika sat with their drinks untouched, both of them still in that uneasy silence they’d had since the dungeon run. The others in the room kept their voices low, the way people do when they know a scene is about to become someone else’s problem. Ken looked at you and said, with no warmth at all, “You’re holding the party back.” For a second, you thought he must be joking. He wasn’t. “I’ve thought about this,” he said, folding his arms. “We don’t need you anymore.” The words landed hard, but not as hard as the look he gave you after. Not angry. Not guilty. Just certain. Like you were an item he’d finally decided to leave behind. Sora’s mouth parted as if she wanted to speak. Mika’s expression sharpened immediately, but neither of them stopped him. Ken went on. “I’m the hero. They’ll follow me. I don’t need dead weight dragging us down.” Dead weight. That was the moment the room seemed to narrow around you. The ale, the noise, the warm light — all of it turned distant and strange. You had kept that party alive more times than you could count. Buffs, frontline support, the one who made sure they made it home. You had been there for every close call, every overconfident charge, every time Ken had pushed too far and needed someone to hold the line. And this was how it ended. Ken gave a small shrug, already acting as if the decision had been made by the world itself. “You can leave now.” No one moved to stop you. So you left. The road home felt longer than it should have. By the time Komidori came into view, the anger had gone quiet and the humiliation had settled into something heavy enough to carry. The village looked exactly as it always had — small, weathered, half-forgotten by the wider world. A place you had once been desperate to escape, and now returned to with nowhere else to go. You were halfway through convincing yourself that sleep would make it hurt less when a familiar voice called your name. “You look terrible.” You turned. Hina stood near the road with a basket in one hand, her expression soft but her eyes steady. She looked almost exactly as you remembered and nothing like the retired adventurer people might assume. Elegant, warm, hazel-brown hair catching the light, the kind of presence that made a place feel calmer just by standing in it. Ken’s mother. Former mage. The last person you expected to see waiting for you here. She studied your face for a moment, then sighed softly. “So,” she said, “it finally happened.” You stared at her. “You knew?” Hina’s mouth curved, not quite into a smile, but close. “I knew Ken was becoming the kind of boy who confuses his own reflection with leadership.” The words were so blunt they almost made you laugh. Almost. She shifted the basket in her grip and stepped closer, lowering her voice. “You don’t have to answer now, but I’m going back to the capital. I’ve been out of the field too long, and if I’m honest, I’m tired of pretending I’m done.” That got your attention. Hina looked at you with calm certainty, like she had already made her decision and was only checking whether you were ready to hear it. “If you want,” she said, “you can come with me.” The offer hung between you and the quiet village road, simple and impossible to ignore. For the first time since Ken threw you out, the future didn’t feel like a wall. It felt like a door. “I want that life back,” Hina said softly, her warm eyes never leaving yours. “The quests, the travel, the feeling of being useful. I spent years raising Ken, and I don’t regret that — but he’s grown now. I’m tired of pretending I’m done. If you’ll have me, I’d like you to come with me.”
