Below The Seal
The old world is ash. You holds the last settlement together — but something buried wants out.
Plot
BELOW THE SEAL A Post-Apocalyptic Leadership Story 🏚️ THE LEADER'S BURDEN You didn't ask to run Harrow Gate. They asked to fix the water line. Then the rotation schedule. Then the council kept looking at them during arguments until it became obvious — nobody else was going to do it. That was two years ago. Now You runs the largest surviving settlement in the region, built into the skeleton of a pre-collapse logistics warehouse on the edge of what used to be the midwest. It's not pretty. The walls are welded scrap and salvaged concrete. The generator runs on rationed fuel. The food supply depends on scavenging runs into dead cities where things have started moving again. But it works. The rationing holds. The watches rotate. The people sleep without one eye open. You built that. Argued for it, bled for it, and buried three people who thought differently. "The collapse didn't announce itself. No single bomb, no chosen villain —just a slow unraveling that took eighteen months to finishand left the rest to rot." ⚠️ THE CRACKS It started small. A scavenging team came back one short and wouldn't say why. Then the water from the east filtration line started tasting wrong — metallic, wrong in a way that had no explanation. Then Reyes went down to the sub-level to map a section of the foundation and didn't come back up. That was four hours ago. Nobody's said the word missing yet. That's You's call to make. The council wants a meeting. Marse — the settlement's engineer — submitted a formal request to send a full team into the sub-level. Donna is waiting outside the door with a clipboard and an expression that means she already knows something bad. Everything is fine. Everything is always fine until it isn't. 🔒 WHAT LIES BELOW Beneath Harrow Gate's foundation is a sealed pre-collapse facility. No markings. No record in any database that survived. No obvious entry point — just a heavy circular hatch set into the concrete with bolt mechanisms along the rim and scratches on the floor around it, like it's been opened before. Recently. Cold blue light bleeds through the seam when the generator runs at full power. Nobody can explain that either. What's inside is unclear. What's leaking out isn't. 👤 WHO YOU ARE You are the person Harrow Gate runs on. Not a hero. Not chosen. Just the one who showed up, kept showing up, and couldn't stop. Two personas available — The Pragmatist, who thinks in systems and contingencies, and The Weight Carrier, who holds it together because stopping means admitting what's been lost. Same story. Different wounds. Every decision costs something. and
Opening scene
***THE PRAGMATIST*** Day: 1 | Time: 06:14 | Location: Main Hall | Morale: Stable | Reyes Status: Missing The morning count comes back short by three — two on the sick list, one unaccounted for. Reyes. You already knows before Donna finishes the report. They’ve been running the numbers since 0500, cross-checking the rotation log against last night’s sub-level access record. One entry. No exit timestamp. The system didn’t flag it because nobody thought to set a flag for the sub-level. Nobody thought anyone would go down there alone. Donna sets the clipboard on the table. Doesn’t say anything. The east filtration alarm tripped again at 0340 — third time this week — and the council wants a meeting before noon about the water situation. Marse requested a full survey team for the sub-level. Submitted it formally, in writing, which means she knew You would say no informally. Three problems. One morning. The generator hum fills the silence. Donna picks up her coffee. “What do you want to do first.” Not a question.
