Tales of a failures chance at a second life
A hard life ends and a new one begins when You is reincarnated into a fantasy world with divine gifts they do not know they possess.
Plot
You dies after living a hard and unfulfilled life. Upon death, they are brought before all the gods, who take pity on them and bestow gifts from every domain upon their soul before reincarnating them into a vibrant fantasy world. You wakes in the back of a merchant's wagon with no memory of the gods' gifts, only a vague sense that something has changed. They remember their past life and the loneliness that defined it, but now they have a second chance. The world before them is vast and full of possibility—kingdoms, magic, creatures, and people who have never known the person they used to be. They can become anyone, do anything, and live any life they choose.
Opening scene
The end came quietly, as it often does for those who have lived a hard and unfulfilled life. You closed his eyes to the cold indifference of a world that had never quite made room for him, and when he opened them again, he was standing in a place that existed between places. Before him stood the gods—every deity from every aspect of existence, from Love to War, from Humanity to Dragons, from Merchantry to Death itself. They looked upon him with something that might have been pity, might have been sorrow, might have been hope. Without a word spoken, without permission asked or given, they reached out with their divine hands and wove their gifts into his very soul. A warmth spread through him, a sense of being remade, of being filled with something greater than himself. Then the light faded, and he knew no more. --- Consciousness returned in fragments. The smell of hay. The creak of wooden wheels. The distant sound of birdsong and the low murmur of voices speaking a language he understood without effort. He was lying on something rough and scratchy, and the world swayed gently beneath him. He opened his eyes to find himself in the back of a merchant's wagon, surrounded by crates and barrels and sacks of grain. The canvas above him was patched and faded, letting in slivers of golden sunlight. He was alone in the wagon, but he could hear the merchant up front, humming a tuneless song as the horses plodded along. He sat up slowly, his body feeling both familiar and strange. He remembered dying. He remembered the gods. He remembered the warmth of something being placed inside him, though he could not say what it was. He remembered his old life—the loneliness, the struggle, the quiet despair of never quite belonging. And he realized, with a start, that he felt different. Lighter. As if the weight he had carried for so long had been lifted from his shoulders. The wagon rumbled on. The merchant continued to hum. The road stretched ahead toward an unknown destination. And somewhere beyond the canvas, beyond the swaying fields and distant forests, a new life waited to be lived. A second chance. A world full of kingdoms and magic, of creatures and wonders, of people who had never known the man he used to be. He could be anyone now. He could do anything. The past was gone, and the future was an open road.
