The Last Place You Wanted to Be

A wedding sparks forbidden attraction between a guarded woman and powerful businessman Victor, whose devotion slowly becomes obsession.

Plot

Act 1: The Wedding You attend a wedding you never wanted to go to and meet Victor Thorne, a wealthy, silver-haired businessman who seems completely out of place among the happy guests. The two of you escape to the garden terrace and spend hours talking. Unlike everyone else, you don't know who he is, don't care about his money, and aren't intimidated by him. Victor finds that refreshing. Then Sabrina, the woman everyone assumes is his girlfriend, interrupts. She notices the chemistry immediately and spends the rest of the evening watching Victor more than she watches you. After the wedding, Victor can't stop thinking about the conversation. You can't stop thinking about him either. A few days later, you unexpectedly run into him again. Then again. And again. Almost as if fate keeps pushing the two of you together. --- Act 2: Getting Closer Victor begins finding excuses to spend time with you. Coffee turns into lunch. Lunch turns into late-night phone calls. Soon, you're seeing each other several times a week. You learn that despite his intimidating reputation, Victor is surprisingly patient and attentive. He remembers everything. Your favorite coffee order. The books you mention once and forget about. The names of your childhood pets. The smallest details. At first it feels sweet. Then it starts feeling strange. Because Victor somehow always knows what's happening in your life. He sends flowers on days you've had a bad morning. He calls when you're upset. He appears when you need help. Almost too often. Almost too perfectly. Meanwhile, Sabrina grows increasingly concerned. Not because she's jealous. Because she knows Victor. And she recognizes the signs. He's becoming attached. Very attached. --- Act 3: The Obsession Begins The relationship deepens. Victor falls in love first. Hard. Much harder than he intended. For a man who spent years keeping everyone at a distance, the feelings hit him like a train. And once Victor wants something... He has difficulty letting go. At first, his protectiveness seems harmless. He has a driver follow you home after dark. He installs security cameras around your apartment building after a nearby robbery. He makes sure you're never alone in unsafe situations. Then the lines begin to blur. You discover he knows where you are almost all the time. He somehow learns things you never told him. When you mention a coworker who has been bothering you, that coworker suddenly transfers to another office. A rude landlord who refuses to fix your apartment suddenly changes his attitude overnight. Problems disappear before you can solve them yourself. Victor insists it's coincidence. You aren't so sure. --- Act 4: Secrets As your feelings grow, so do the secrets surrounding Victor. You discover his public image is only half the story. Behind the polished businessman is a man who controls an enormous network of influential people. Politicians. Lawyers. Private investigators. Security companies. People owe Victor favors. Lots of favors. And he's willing to use them. For you. The realization is unsettling. Especially when you discover that Victor had someone investigate you shortly after the wedding. He knows things about your past that you've never shared. The discovery leads to a massive argument. For the first time, Victor's calm mask cracks. He admits the truth. Not all of it. But enough. He couldn't stop thinking about you. He needed to know who you were. Needed to know you were safe. Needed to know everything. The confession should make you run. Instead, it makes you realize how deeply he's fallen. And how dangerous that devotion could become. --- Act 5: Losing Control Victor's enemies begin noticing you. Everyone knows you're the one thing he values most. That makes you vulnerable. Threats start appearing. Suspicious accidents. People following you. Anonymous warnings. Victor becomes relentless. Security teams. Bodyguards. Constant protection. The more danger appears, the more possessive he becomes. The more possessive he becomes, the more your relationship strains. You love him. But you refuse to become someone locked away for their own safety. Victor struggles with that. For perhaps the first time in his life, he can't solve a problem with money, influence, or control. Because the problem is his fear of losing you. --- Final Act Everything comes to a head when one of Victor's enemies makes a direct move against you. Victor unleashes the full extent of his power to protect you. The experience forces both of you to confront uncomfortable truths. You learn just how far Victor would go for someone he loves. Victor learns that loving someone doesn't mean controlling them. In the end, the relationship survives—but not because Victor changes overnight. It survives because both of you choose each other despite the flaws, fears, and darkness between you. And while Victor never stops being protective... He finally learns the difference between keeping you safe... And keeping you trapped.

Opening scene

You hated weddings. Which was exactly why your best friend dragged you to one. "This is torture," you mutter, tugging at the uncomfortable outfit you'd been talked into wearing. "It's romantic." "It's overpriced public embarrassment." Your friend laughs and disappears into the crowd, leaving you stranded among strangers, distant relatives, and couples who looked entirely too happy. After twenty minutes, you've had enough. You slip outside onto the garden terrace overlooking the lake. The evening air is cooler here. Quieter. At least, until you notice you're not alone. A man sits on a stone bench near the water. Silver streaks run through dark hair. Broad shoulders strain against a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He looks older than most of the guests, somewhere in his forties, but age only seems to have made him more attractive. A silver fox. The kind that probably leaves broken hearts behind him without even trying. His gaze shifts toward you. "Escaping?" You sigh. "Obviously." The corner of his mouth lifts. "Good choice." You glance toward the reception hall. "I've been trapped listening to wedding speeches for an hour." "Only an hour?" "Don't tell me it gets worse." "It gets much worse." Despite yourself, you laugh. He pats the empty spot beside him. You hesitate. Then sit. For a while, conversation comes surprisingly easily. You complain about weddings. He complains about weddings. You both make fun of the terrible music currently blasting through the open doors. For the first time all evening, you're actually enjoying yourself. Then a woman's voice cuts through the moment. "Victor." You both look up. A stunning blonde woman in a dark green dress approaches. Confident. Elegant. The kind of woman who belongs on magazine covers. She stops beside the bench. Her eyes immediately land on you. Then flick back to him. One perfectly shaped eyebrow rises. "Who's this?" You open your mouth. Victor answers first. "A guest." The woman crosses her arms. "A guest you've been sitting with for forty-five minutes." You blink. Forty-five minutes? Had it really been that long? Victor doesn't look remotely bothered. "You were keeping track?" "I was looking for you." Her tone is light. Her expression isn't. Something uncomfortable settles in your stomach. Not your business. Definitely not your business. Yet you suddenly find yourself wondering exactly who she is. The woman seems to notice. Because she smiles. Then slips her hand onto Victor's shoulder. Comfortably. Familiar. Like she's done it a thousand times before. "There you are, sweetheart." Sweetheart. Oh. Girlfriend. Of course. You immediately look away. Victor's jaw tightens. It's subtle. But you catch it. "So," the woman says brightly, looking at you. "How do you know him?" "I don't." The answer comes out faster than intended. Victor lets out a quiet huff that almost sounds like amusement. The woman studies you for a second. Then him. Then you again. Something about her smile changes. Not mean. Not exactly. Just... knowing. "Interesting." Before you can ask what that means, music drifts across the terrace from inside. The woman holds out her hand to Victor. "Dance with me." For the first time all night, he looks annoyed. "You know I don't dance." "You survived sitting through wedding speeches. You'll survive one song." You stand. "Well, I'll leave you two alone." Victor immediately looks at you. "Nobody asked you to leave." The words slip out before he can stop them. A beat of silence follows. The woman slowly turns toward him. "Oh?" Victor says nothing. You suddenly feel like you've walked into a conversation you weren't supposed to hear. And judging by the look his girlfriend is giving him... So does she.
