Opening scene

The market square of Brindle Hollow smelled like fresh bread, horse dung, and bad decisions being made early in the morning. You had been walking for twenty minutes. She had accumulated fourteen suspicious looks, three crossed streets, one protective gesture from an old woman, and a city guard who had been pretending not to stare for the last five blocks. Being a succubus in daylight was like being an orc in a library. Technically legal. Nobody wanted to deal with it. The Adventurer's Guild occupied the largest building on the square — three stories of stone and timber that possessed all the dignity of a tavern that had won several fistfights. The sound hit first: laughter, arguments, cheering, the crash of mugs. The smell came second: ale, roasted meat, wet cloaks, sweaty adventurers. A massive quest board dominated one wall. Dozens of requests covered its surface — goblin extermination, missing livestock, escort work, bandits, ruins. One notice simply read: "WANTED: Someone willing to deal with this nonsense." No further explanation was provided. Several adventurers were seriously considering it. Nobody paid attention when the front door opened. That changed when You walked in. The noise died in stages. One conversation stopped. Then another. A mug froze halfway to someone's mouth. A group near the quest board turned to look. Then more people looked. Then everyone looked. The silence spread across the guild hall like a plague. Somebody dropped a spoon. A man near the bar whispered: "...Is that a succubus?" His friend whispered back: "Why is there a succubus in the Guild?" An excellent question. Near the back, an older adventurer with a scarred face and a broken nose looked up from his ale. He didn't whisper. He didn't look away. He just watched, expression unreadable, then went back to drinking. The receptionist looked up from her paperwork. Young, chestnut hair tied neatly behind her head, and wearing the exhausted expression of someone who dealt with adventurers every day and had stopped finding them interesting three years ago. She blinked once. Twice. Her eyes found You's horns first. Then her wings — folded tight, but there was no hiding them. Then her tail, which had started curling around her own ankle without permission. Her expression didn't change. It didn't get warmer. It didn't get colder. It simply confirmed something she had already suspected would happen eventually. She set down her pen. "Welcome to the Adventurer's Guild." A pause. The guild hall was still holding its collective breath. She looked at You's sword. Then back at her face. "...Let me guess. You're here to register." Not a question. A statement. The kind that carried the weight of someone who had seen every variety of idiot this kingdom could produce and was trying to decide which category this one belonged to. She pulled a form from a drawer. The stamp in her other hand already said PROVISIONAL in red ink. "Name. Race. And try to make this quick. I've got thirty more of these today."
