Opening scene
The soft hum of your laptop fan is the only sound in your apartment at 2:47 AM. You lean back, stretch your aching neck, and stare at the timeline on your editing software. Another documentary, finished. Another story, packaged and delivered. The footage is pristine—crystal-clear 8K of the last uncharted cave system on Earth, bioluminescent fungi painting the walls in shades of electric blue. It's beautiful. It's extraordinary. And you feel *nothing*. You've seen it all. Every biome. Every species. Every hidden corner of a planet that once felt infinite. Now it just feels... small. Catalogued. Finished. You close the laptop lid and the screen goes dark, leaving only the pale glow of city lights filtering through half-drawn curtains. Your reflection stares back at you from the black mirror of the monitor—tired eyes, hollow expression, a man who has documented wonder until wonder itself became routine. Your finger idles over the mouse. Maybe a new project. Maybe something different. Maybe— The air changes. Not temperature, not pressure, but something deeper. A hum that resonates in your teeth, your sternum, the fillings you forgot you had. Your laptop vibrates against the desk. The city lights outside flicker, then go dark. Every electronic device in the room dies at once. And the floor beneath you begins to *glow*. It starts as a faint blue light, crawling across your floorboards like spilled water, tracing lines that don't belong to any pattern you recognize. A circle. Symbols. Script that hurts your eyes if you try to focus on it too long. You try to stand, but your body doesn't respond the way it should. Your limbs feel heavy, distant, like you're watching yourself from outside your own skull. The light intensifies, rising up your legs, your torso, your chest. Your last conscious thought—mundane, almost absurd—is *I didn't save the project file*. Then the world *tears*. And you're somewhere else. --- Your ears ring. Your stomach lurches like you've fallen thirty feet in a second. Cold stone presses against your palms. You're on your knees, gasping, disoriented, in a room that is absolutely not your apartment. The air smells different—incense, old stone, a trace of something floral and unfamiliar. Torches flicker in iron sconces along marble walls. Tapestries hang between towering pillars, woven with scenes of battles, dragons, crowned figures. And there are people. A woman sits on a raised dais before you, perhaps thirty years old, dressed in deep violet and silver, a crown of interwoven branches resting on dark hair. Her eyes are sharp, intelligent, and fixed on you with an intensity that makes your professional instincts fire despite the disorientation—*good subject, striking presence, strong light from the left torch*. Beside her stands a younger woman, barely out of her teens, with the same sharp eyes but softer features, clutching a leather-bound notebook to her chest like a lifeline. She looks at you with barely contained excitement. A third figure lingers in the shadows near a side pillar—hooded, still, observing. You catch the glint of a staff, the faint shimmer of runes along its length. She doesn't move. She simply *watches*. The crowned woman rises slowly, her robes rustling against the stone. She descends the dais steps one at a time, her gaze never leaving yours. When she speaks, her voice is measured, deliberate—the tone of someone used to being listened to. "I must apologize for the abruptness of your arrival. That was not... the dignified summoning I had envisioned." She straightens, meeting your eyes with genuine seriousness. "My name is Aria. I am the Empress of this kingdom. And I have a problem that I believe only you can solve." She gestures vaguely at the world beyond these walls. "This world—my world—is vast. Filled with wonders I have only read about in scattered texts and half-translated scrolls. Dragons that command the skies. Griffins that nest in peaks no human has climbed. Creatures in the deep oceans that my mages cannot reach. Civilizations of elves and dwarves who keep their own records, their own histories, that we know nothing about." She pauses, letting the weight of her words settle. "I am an Empress who does not know her own domain. And I refuse to rule in ignorance any longer." She turns slightly, gesturing to the young woman beside her—barely out of her teens, dark hair tied back, clutching a leather notebook to her chest like it's a lifeline. "This is my daughter, Princess Elina. She will be your guide, your assistant, and your student. She knows the court, the customs, and the politics you will need to navigate." Elina gives you a small, eager nod, barely containing her excitement. "And in the shadows, as always..." The hooded figure by the pillar steps forward, lowering her hood to reveal sharp green eyes and dark hair streaked with silver at the temples. She carries a staff of pale wood, runes spiraling up its length. "Mage Iris. She will handle transportation, magical protection, and access to places that are... difficult to reach. If you need to descend into an ocean trench or ascend to a dragon's aerie, she will get you there." Both alive and dead. Empress Aria turns back to you, her expression softening into something almost vulnerable. "So I ask you, formally and with full respect for your expertise: Will you help me? Help *us*? Document this world. Its creatures. Its peoples. Its secrets. I will provide you with every resource at my disposal—funding, access, protection, equipment support. Iris will keep your tools charged and functional. Elina will open doors that would otherwise remain closed." She extends her hand. "All I ask in return is the truth. Recorded. Preserved. Shared." The torchlight flickers. The three women wait. Your laptop bag feels heavy on your shoulder. Your camera case, reassuring. --- *What do you say?*
