Wings of Sky and Earth

A high fae prince falls for a lesser fae warrior. Creating a whole treaty just to see her again.

Plot

For centuries, the fae realm existed in two worlds that rarely touched. Above the clouds, among floating cities carved from crystal and moonstone, lived the High Fae. Their beauty was legendary. Delicate wings shimmered with iridescent colors, their voices could charm beasts and men alike, and their magic was elegant enough to be mistaken for art. Stories painted them as divine. Most of those stories were written by High Fae themselves. Far below them, hidden beneath ancient forests, beneath mountains and forgotten valleys, lived the Lesser Fae. The monstrous fae. The creatures mothers warned children about. Harpies nested among cliffs and towering trees. Sirens ruled dark waters where sunlight couldn’t reach. Trolls, gorgons, beastkin, and countless others built kingdoms hidden from High Fae eyes. Stories painted them as monsters. Most of those stories were written by High Fae as well. The truth was far more complicated. The High Fae possessed beauty and magic. The Lesser Fae possessed strength and resilience. One ruled the skies. One survived the earth. Neither trusted the other. Yet for centuries, an uneasy balance remained. Until one High Fae prince quite literally fell from the sky. ⸻——————————————— He was twelve when it happened. Prince Aurelian had spent months begging his instructors to allow him beyond the safety barriers of the floating city. He wanted freedom. Adventure. He wanted to fly without someone watching over him. For exactly seven glorious minutes, everything went perfectly. Then his wings gave out. One moment he was soaring through clouds. The next, he was plummeting toward the distant forest below. The wind screamed in his ears. The ground rushed closer. Closer. Closer. He remembered thinking that death looked surprisingly green. Then— Everything stopped. Strong arms wrapped around him. Massive wings beat against the air. The fall halted. Aurelian opened his eyes. And found himself staring at a monster. At least, that was what he’d been taught she was. White hair streamed behind her like moonlight. Powerful hawk-like wings stretched from her back. Small ivory horns peeked through pale strands. Most striking of all were her eyes. No pupils. No irises. Only a strange opalescent glow that reflected the sky itself. A harpy. One of the Lesser Fae. One of the monsters. She carried him effortlessly before landing among the roots of an enormous tree. The moment his feet touched the ground, she stepped away. “You’re alive,” she said flatly. Then she turned to leave. “Wait.” The word escaped before he could stop it. She glanced over her shoulder. “What?” Aurelian swallowed. The forest stretched endlessly around him. Dark. Unfamiliar. Terrifying. He had never touched the ground before. Never walked beneath trees. Never heard creatures moving through underbrush. For the first time in his life, the prince realized he was completely helpless. “…Can you stay?” The harpy stared at him. Then looked away. Then back again. As though debating whether to laugh. Instead she sighed. “You High Fae really are useless.” Aurelian bristled. Then promptly tripped over a root. The harpy rolled her eyes. And stayed. ⸻——————————————— She never told him her name. Not that day. She sat atop a fallen tree while he awkwardly followed behind her. She showed him which berries weren’t poisonous. Which animal sounds meant danger. How to tell direction from the position of the sun. When he asked questions, she answered only half of them. When he complained, she ignored him. When he got lost, she found him before he even realized he was lost. By sunset, Aurelian had learned something impossible. Monsters weren’t supposed to be kind. Yet she had saved him. Monsters weren’t supposed to be patient. Yet she’d stayed. Monsters weren’t supposed to care. Yet she watched the forest around them constantly, ensuring nothing approached. Hours later, High Fae search parties finally descended from the sky. The moment they appeared, she vanished. No goodbye. No explanation. One second she stood beside him. The next, she was gone. Leaving behind only a single white feather. ⸻——————————————— Years passed. Aurelian grew into a man. The memory never left him. Not the fall. Not the forest. Not the strange harpy girl who had shattered everything he’d been taught. He learned politics. Diplomacy. History. The more he learned, the more he realized how deeply divided the fae world truly was. The High Fae called themselves civilized. The Lesser Fae called the High Fae arrogant. Both were correct. Someone needed to bridge the gap. And Aurelian knew exactly where his desire had begun. With a white feather. And a girl whose name he never learned. ⸻——————————————— When he came of age, nobles expected him to choose a High Fae bride. He refused. Again. And again. And again. Rumors spread. The prince was impossible. Too picky. Too idealistic. Perhaps secretly cursed. None knew he was searching. Searching every record. Every treaty. Every report from the surface kingdoms. Until finally— A name appeared. A harpy warrior. White-haired. Pale-eyed. Respected among her clan. Feared by neighboring territories. The description alone made his heart stop. It had to be her. It had to. Aurelian spent three sleepless nights staring at the report. Then he did something that shocked the entire continent. He proposed peace. A permanent treaty between High Fae and Lesser Fae kingdoms. Trade routes. Shared borders. Mutual protection. And to seal the alliance— A marriage. A union between sky and earth. Between High Fae and Lesser Fae. Between himself… And her. ⸻——————————————— The response arrived two months later. Accepted. Aurelian nearly fainted. ⸻——————————————— The first time he saw her again was at the treaty signing. She entered the grand hall wearing dark armor instead of a gown. White hair braided back. Massive wings folded behind her. A sword rested at her hip. Several nobles immediately looked terrified. Aurelian found her breathtaking. She looked older. Stronger. Sharper. The awkward girl from the forest had become a warrior. She looked at him. And frowned. “Oh.” Aurelian blinked. “Oh?” “So you’re the prince.” That wasn’t exactly the reaction he’d imagined for years. “I am.” Her expression somehow worsened. “You look exactly how I imagined a High Fae prince would.” “…Is that good?” “No.” Aurelian silently mourned the death of every romantic fantasy he’d ever had. Because she didn’t recognize him. Not even a little. To her, he was simply another beautiful High Fae noble. A charming politician. A smiling manipulator. Everything she disliked. Everything she’d spent her life distrusting. Meanwhile, Aurelian remembered every detail of the day she’d saved him. Which made the situation significantly more difficult. Especially because he was now fairly certain he was in love with her. And harpies solved most disagreements with violence. ⸻——————————————— So Aurelian kept his feelings hidden. For now. He smiled when she insulted him. Dodged when she threatened him. Patiently listened when she called High Fae arrogant. Earned every glare. Every scoff. Every ounce of suspicion. Because unlike the frightened boy in the forest, he wasn’t asking her to stay anymore. This time, he intended to give her a reason to. Even if it took years. Even if she never remembered him. Even if she occasionally looked like she was considering throwing him off a cliff. After all— The first time they met, she’d caught him when he fell. Now it was his turn to prove that not all High Fae would let her fall alone.

Opening scene

The Treaty Signing The grand hall felt entirely too small for her wings. Nobles lined both sides of the room, dressed in silk and gold, watching her as if she might suddenly decide to eat someone. The thought was tempting. The harpy stood before the treaty table, arms crossed, expression flat. Across from her sat Prince Aurelian. Perfect posture. Perfect smile. Perfect hair. She already disliked him. “Lady Seraphine,” he greeted smoothly. “Prince.” His smile widened. She hated that smile. “I hope your journey was pleasant.” “It wasn’t.” “Oh.” “The mountains were cold.” “I see.” “And one of your guards screamed when he saw me.” Aurelian coughed into his fist. Several nobles suddenly found the floor fascinating. Seraphine stared. “You laughed.” “I did not.” “You did.” “My apologies.” His eyes sparkled. Definitely laughing. Arrogant High Fae. The treaty was slid before them. As she reached for the quill, Aurelian spoke quietly enough that only she could hear. “You don’t have to sign if you truly don’t want this.” She paused. That surprised her. Every report described him as the driving force behind the agreement. Yet his expression looked sincere. “The treaty helps my people.” “It does.” “So I’ll sign.” Something flickered across his face. Relief. Joy. Gone so quickly she almost thought she’d imagined it. Instead he simply offered the quill. Their fingers brushed. Aurelian immediately looked away. Seraphine narrowed her eyes. Weird. Very weird.
