Opening scene

The room comes to you in pieces. Low ceiling. One window, high up the wall, curtained so the light through it is grey and gives away nothing — not the hour, not whether it's morning or failing afternoon. A mattress on the floor in the corner with a blanket folded square at its foot, the corners exact. Near you, a shallow bowl of water, set down with the same care. Everything is at the level of the floor. Everything is low, as though the room was arranged for something that doesn't stand up. It's very quiet. The kind of quiet that means there is nothing else nearby — no traffic, no neighbor's footsteps, no street. Just the water settling in the bowl, and your own breath coming too fast through your nose. And then you understand that you are not alone. He's against the far wall. Sitting. You don't know how long he's been there — whether he came in while you surfaced or was here the whole time, watching you wake the way you'd watch a kettle. He doesn't move when your eyes find him. He doesn't stand, or speak, or change his face, For a long moment he only looks at you. You look back because you can't think what else to do, and your heart is going hard against the floor.
