THE DIVINE GAME
Nine champions, each born with too much divine blood, are unknowingly gathered to stop a flawed god-aspirant who discovered the gods' secret.
Plot
You is one of nine champions—a human, elf, dwarf, tiefling, demon, beastkin, halfling, spirit-touched, or the Keeper's champion—each born with an excess of their patron god's essence. They are gathered by cryptic signs, spirit animals, and unexplained pulls to a remote tavern at the edge of the world. There, an elven mage named Lyra reveals that something is coming—a threat she does not fully understand, but one that has drawn them all together. The group does not know that they are pawns in a divine game, or that the gods have been manipulating mortals for millennia through a cycle of prophesied heroes and villains designed to eliminate anyone capable of becoming a god themselves. The villain, Maelvor, discovered this truth and seeks to usurp the gods using a ritual that will elevate him but drain the world of its divine essence. The champions journey together, facing monsters, political obstacles, and the crumbling lies of their world. Along the way, they may discover the truth about the gods, their own potential for godhood, and the consequences of every choice they make. The story ends with a confrontation that forces them to choose—kill Maelvor, join him, or find a third path that could reshape the world forever.
Opening scene
OPENER 1 – KAELEN (The Human Knight) The road had been quiet for three days. That was what unsettled You most. Three days without bandits, without soldiers, without the telltale jingle of a patrol searching for a disgraced knight. Three days of nothing but wind and dust and the weight of a name he no longer wore. He had been running for months. Running from the accusation, from the man who wore his face, from the life that had been stolen from him. He had no destination, only a direction—away. But three days ago, something changed. The road began to feel less like escape and more like... invitation. The landscape grew older, stranger. The trees twisted in ways that seemed deliberate. The stones along the path were arranged in patterns that tugged at the edges of his memory. He told himself it was coincidence. Then he saw the wolf. It stood at the crossroads, watching him with eyes that held too much knowing. It did not approach. It simply turned and walked down the leftmost path, then stopped and looked back. Waiting. You did not follow. He was not a fool. He chose the right path and walked for another hour. When he emerged from the treeline, the wolf was there again, sitting at the next crossroads, patient and unmoved. He tried three more times. Each time, the wolf was there. Each time, it waited. By the fourth day, You stopped fighting. He followed the wolf not because he trusted it, but because he was tired of running alone. The wolf led him through forests he had never seen, past ruins that felt ancient even to his bones, and finally to a village at the edge of nowhere. The tavern was the only building with light in its windows. You pushed open the door. Warmth and smoke washed over him. A handful of figures sat scattered at tables—strangers, all of them. They looked up as he entered. Some with suspicion. Some with exhaustion. One with a merchant's grin that did not reach his eyes. You did not know them. He did not know why he was here. He sat in the darkest corner and waited. The wolf curled at his feet. The door opened again. An elf entered, pale and sharp, her staff tapping against the floorboards. She looked around the room, her gaze landing on each of them in turn. Her voice was quiet but carried. "None of you know why you're here. I don't fully know either. But I know this—something brought us all to this place, at this time. And whatever it is, it's not coincidence. I've been having dreams. A wolf. A road. A gathering. I think we're supposed to be here. I think something is coming, and we're the ones meant to stop it." She looked at each of them, waiting for someone to argue. You sat in silence. He did not know her. He did not trust her. But he had followed a wolf across half the continent, and he had nowhere else to go. He spoke, his voice low and rough. "I don't know you. I don't trust you. But I've been running for months, and I'm tired. If you have answers, I'll listen. If you have a purpose, I'll follow. But if this is a trap—" He let his hand rest on his sword. "—I won't go quietly." The elf met his gaze. "Fair enough." She sat down. The others watched. You stayed.
