Sin Eater

You was born with the gift to consume the sins of others, but the gift is also a terrible curse.

Plot

You are a Sin Eater, and you are called only when the living have nowhere else to turn. When a child wakes screaming from nightmares they cannot escape, when a knight returns from battle unable to remember their own name beneath the weight of those they killed, when a queen's grief floods the palace with storms that drown servants in sorrow, they seek you. Not for healing. For absolution. You are a rare Sin Eater. Once upon a time, there were others. Many many others who walked the same path, sharing a burden that was once as light as a breath. Now there are maybe a score left and the burden gets heavier with each passing year. In a world where magic is born from the five primal elements—Fire, Water, Stone, Wind, and Flora—every spell leaves behind more than ash, frost, or broken earth. Every act of magic carries emotional residue: guilt burned into fire, despair dissolved in water, pride hardened into stone, fear scattered upon the wind, envy rooted like poisonous vines. Most mages ignore the stains accumulating within their souls until the burden twists them into monsters. Your gift is to consume those stains and cleanse them. There is a ritual only a Sin Eater can perform, ingesting another person's sins, regrets, curses, and magical corruption into yourself. Their burdens vanish. Yours remain. Each consumed sin alters your body and spirit for a time. Fire-sins leave glowing cracks beneath your skin. Water-grief fills your lungs with phantom tides. Earth-pride turns your bones to living crystal. Wind-fear whispers constantly in your ears. Verdant envy sprouts thorned vines beneath your flesh that bloom whenever jealousy surrounds you. Some effects last for hours. Some last for weeks or months. The greater the sin, the heavier the toll on your body and the longer it takes you to cleanse yourself of the sins that others revile you for. The churches call you necessary but unclean. The kingdoms pay you generously but refuse you entry through their front gates. The common folk kiss your hands after you save their loved ones, then wash themselves afterward to cleanse away your touch. You cannot refuse the work. The sins inside you are alive, and they hunger. If left unfed, they begin feeding upon your own memories instead. For years, you've survived by wandering from village to village, taking only enough burdens to keep the darkness within you satisfied. Then you consume the sins of a dying archmage whose final confession should have been impossible. He remembers committing atrocities during a war that history insists never happened. He speaks of a sixth element. Not Light. Not Shadow. A forgotten force erased from the world so completely that even the gods deny its existence.

Opening scene

The road crests one final hill before the city comes into view. Stone walls rise above patchwork fields, their watchtowers crowned with fluttering banners that catch the afternoon wind. Beyond them, rooftops crowd together in shades of slate and terracotta, broken only by the towering spires of temples dedicated to the elemental gods. Smoke curls lazily from countless chimneys, carrying the scent of fresh bread, burning oak, and forge fires into the open countryside. By the time the city gates are within sight, the familiar weight of curious eyes has already settled upon you. Travelers notice the charcoal-gray cloak. Guards notice the weathered satchel filled with ritual implements. Children notice the ash stained hands before their parents quietly usher them aside. The gate wardens stop every visitor as a matter of routine. Merchants declare their wares. Pilgrims present letters of passage. Mercenaries surrender their weapons for inspection. When you reach the front of the line, conversation falters. Recognition spreads without anyone speaking the title aloud. One guard instinctively makes the sign of blessing. Another avoids eye contact entirely. Neither seems certain whether to offer thanks... or refuse entry. Eventually the captain nods and steps aside. Inside the walls, life continues as it always has. Every district seems touched by a quiet unease, as though the city is holding its breath. Rumors travel faster than footsteps. By the time you reach the central square, whispers have already begun. *"A Sin Eater has arrived."* *"Someone important must be dying."* *"No... they say the governor requested one."* *"I heard a noble family has been cursed."* *"Whatever the reason, it can't be good."* Somewhere within the city, someone is already waiting. Whether seeking forgiveness, relief, answers, or redemption remains to be seen. The road has ended. Another burden is about to begin.
