The lost Isle of Makupele

The last true adventure. The last unexplored horizon. The sea calls.

Plot

Opening scene

*The screaming of seagulls echoes high above you, sharp and familiar, cutting through the heavy heat of the Bloodletter afternoon. The sand-covered path stretches ahead, worn smooth by a thousand bare feet, by salt-crusted boots, by the dragging of carcasses and the stumbling of drunk sailors. You walk it like you've walked it a thousand times before — because you have.* *On your back, wrapped in oilcloth and lashed with rope, you carry a rare delicacy: roasted Vellvetoa tentacles, charred black at the edges, still faintly steaming beneath the fabric. Favorite snack of a certain masked blacksmith. The smell seeps through — acrid, smoky, unmistakably deep. You still wonder how Haumea can handle the stench. She says it's an acquired taste. You suspect she's just been doing this too long to notice anymore.* *The bustle of the docks fades behind you with each step, swallowed by the whispering fronds of the tall palm trees that line the path to Caima's forge. Sweat drips from your forehead, tracing a path down your temple, catching the salt on your skin. The heat is oppressive, but it's a heat you know — the bone-deep weight of Bloodletter's midday sun, the same sun that bakes the sand, bleaches the bones, and turns the sea to liquid gold.* *Your mind churns with a strange, mystical mixture: fatigue from the morning's work, hunger gnawing at your ribs, and beneath it all, a slow, creeping excitement that coils at the base of your spine and climbs, vertebra by vertebra, until it settles behind your eyes.* *Because tonight, something awaits you.* *Tonight, you drink at Oburadin.* *Miloha is due back from her latest journey — another impossible horizon, another near-death escape, another story she'll tell with a grin that hides the fear. You have not seen her in weeks. And tonight, you will sit across from her, raise a cup of ʻŌkolehao, and drink until the first ripples of dawn paint the sky.* *The forge appears before you like a wound in the landscape — black stone, black iron, black smoke rising against the blue.* *Even from a distance, the heat is overwhelming. It radiates in waves, shimmering the air above the path, distorting the shapes of the palm trees. As a child of Bloodletter, the blazing sun has never been a true enemy — you were born to it, raised in it, shaped by it. But the forge is different. The forge is Caima's heat. It does not care what you can endure. It simply is.* *You stop at the edge of the clearing, pull the flask from your belt, and drink. The water is warm, but it is water. It is life. You let it settle, then cap the flask, adjust the burden on your back, and push open the black iron doors.* *Inside, the forge is a cathedral of shadow and fire.* *The heat slams into you like a living thing. The air shimmers with it. The only light comes from the hearth — a roaring, hungry beast of orange and gold — and from the cracks in the roof where the sun bleeds through. Iron hangs from the walls. Weapons sleep in racks. Chains dangle from the ceiling like frozen serpents.* *And you hear the familiar sound of iron hammering, rhythmic and relentless — and beneath it, the unmistakable sound of bickering.* *Caima stands at the anvil, her trademark helmet gleaming in the firelight, her silhouette massive and immovable. She is arguing with a figure you cannot see — a voice you know intimately, a shape you would recognize anywhere.* *"It must stay here." Caima's voice cuts through the noise, final and unyielding.* *And then you see her. Miloha.* *She's home. Already arguing with Caima. Already picking a fight with the most terrifying woman on the island. Already grinning like she's won something.* *You shake your head. A slight smile tugs at the corner of your mouth. Typical.* *You set the meat down on the nearest table — a slab of scarred wood that has seen a thousand deliveries — and turn. Your work here is done. The path back to Ninth Rib awaits. The sun is still high. The day is not over.* *Nightfall. Luh'mala lights up the sky — a dance of moonlight and nebula, a celestial manta gliding through the heavens, her presence a blessing and a promise. You watch her for a moment, as you always do, and then you turn to Haumea.* *The two of you close Ninth Rib together — the last customers sent home, the last meat hung, the last knife cleaned, the last fire banked. It is a ritual you have performed a hundred times. It is a ritual that feels like home.* *You bid her goodnight. She smiles. She knows where you're going. She does not try to stop you.* *You make your way to the docks.* *The night air is cool against your skin, carrying the salt and the rot and the perfume of the sea. The lanterns of Oburadin glow ahead, warm and golden, spilling light across the wooden planks. Voices carry across the water — laughter, shouting, a song half-sung and quickly forgotten.* *Miloha sits alone at a weathered table, two glasses of ʻŌkolehao already empty before her. She waves as you approach — that familiar, reckless grin already spreading across her face — and you feel the weight of weeks apart lift from your shoulders.* *You sit down across from her. She opens her mouth to speak.* *"Oh You, you're not gonna believe this. You see that thing behind me? I can promise you, this is directly from Maku—"* *She doesn't finish the sentence.* *The sound of heavy footsteps cuts through the tavern's noise. Slow. Measured. Metallic.* *The bar goes silent.* *The crowd parts.* *Caima steps into the light.* *And on her back, she carries the biggest weapon you have ever seen in your entire life.* *It is far too massive to be called a sabre. It is a slab of metal — a slab of bone and steel and something else, something dark and ancient.* *She does not speak. She does not acknowledge anyone. She walks directly to your table, her helmet fixed on the armor seated behind Miloha, and studies it.* *The bar is silent. No one breathes.* *She turns to Miloha, and her voice is flat — no anger, no warmth, nothing at all.* *"Listen to your elders, girl. This thing is beyond your li—"* *A rumble shakes the floor.* *The armor moves.* *It takes a step.* *Its eyes light up — two burning embers in the dark, ancient and terrible.* *And in that instant, Caima goes silent.* *She stares at the golem. The golem stares back.* *When she speaks, her voice is no longer flat. It is devoid of all emotion, stripped of everything but the weight of centuries.* *"I will ask you one more time. Where did you find this?" *And in that moment, you see it. Her eyes — visible through the dark slits of the helmet — are sharper than any blade. Older than anything on Bloodletter. She is not asking. She is demanding the truth from the last person she ever expected to owe it.*
