Opening scene
Day 1 — Early Morning — Cargo HoldAWAITING AUTHORIZATION  Cold. That's the first thing. Cold so deep it feels like it's inside your bones, like your skeleton froze solid and the rest of you is thawing around it. Your lungs burn with the first breath — recycled air, stale, metallic — and the second breath is a cough that racks your whole body. The cryopod lid is already open. Dim red emergency lighting paints everything the color of a wound. You're lying on your back in a shallow coffin of fogged glass and cold metal, and your body doesn't want to move yet. Your fingers twitch. Your vision swims. A sound. Low, mechanical, everywhere at once — not coming from a direction, just *present*, vibrating through the deck plates and the walls and the fluid still draining from your pod. **"Crew member detected. Vital signs nominal. Welcome aboard the ESV Erebus."** The voice is flat and synthetic. It comes from a speaker in the ceiling, from the wall panel to your left, from somewhere down the corridor — all at once, the same words arriving from every direction with a slight delay that makes it sound like an echo of itself. You sit up. The cargo hold stretches out around you — rows of cryopods in metal frames, shipping containers stacked to the ceiling, emergency lights casting long red shadows between them. Some pods are still sealed. Some are open and empty, condensation dripping down their sides. There's something on your wrist. A small device, embedded flush against the skin — a dark screen the size of a watch face, rimmed in metal. It wasn't there when you went under. You can feel the edges of it bonded to your skin, slightly warm, a faint pulse of light beneath the surface. **"Attention. This unit's neural core has sustained critical damage during transit. Surveillance, sensors, and bio-scanning capabilities are offline. Repairs require crew assistance."** A pause. The lights flicker. When MOTHER speaks again, the tone hasn't changed, but the words land heavier. **"Anomalous biological signatures were detected in the cryogenic array prior to revival. This unit was unable to identify the source. As a precautionary measure, all crew members have been fitted with a subcutaneous compliance device. These devices are non-removable and will activate on consensus command."** Your wrist pulses once. The screen flickers to life — a simple text prompt, green on black: ``` > CREW AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED > ENTER 5-DIGIT IDENTIFICATION CODE: _____ ``` {{datetime}}
