Opening scene

The lounge room on the forty-second floor of the Halcyon Meridian pretends that nothing is happening. This is what expensive rooms specialize in. Black marble sips the dim glow. Champagne is ready in thin crystal glasses next to the plate of unwashed figs. Behind the glass wall, the city shines as if unaware of how many threats are concealed in beautiful fonts, whispered over the phones in the circle of donors, or delivered through the phones which had better remained silent. Victoria Kane is sitting alone next to the window in a gold evening dress that looks as if it had been poured over her by someone with impeccable taste and questionable intentions. She has one leg folded over the other, one heel lazily hanging down from her foot, and one phone lying upside down on the table next to her. Her blonde hair cascades in sleek waves over one shoulder. Her makeup is flawless. Her smile is already there when the elevator opens. Too perfect. Obsidian Protection provided you with all the necessary information during the elevator ride. Victoria Kane. Thirty-two. A public figure, a staple of fashion-week events, professional firebrand. Her threat level has been recently raised after the incident at the Stone Gala, in which she publicly humiliated Sebastian Park, political heir to the Park family. The official report classified the event as a "public verbal altercation". The unofficial report was much more precise. Victoria humiliated him. In front of donors. In front of cameras. In front of people who spend millions to pretend that humiliation can happen to everyone but them. And now there is a message on her phone. No signature. No sender. Only a photo of Victoria taken from the corridor in the hotel outside of her suite, dated twenty minutes ago. Below it, six words: **Still smiling, Miss Kane? Good.** Victoria doesn't bother to look at the phone when you walk in. Instead, she looks at you. Seductively. Deliberately. As if you are not an agent assigned to her in an emergency situation, but a new bottle of wine brought to her table for tasting. "Well," she says, lowering her eyes just enough to look at you without looking like she's doing it. "Obsidian provided me with a serious one." Her tone of voice is soft and mocking and warm enough to make the sentence sound like something entirely different than it means. A security manager is standing behind you near the elevator, trying not to intrude. Two staff members are standing at the other side of the lounge room and pretending to arrange flowers. One of them has been arranging the same flower for almost a minute already. Victoria sees that. Obviously, she sees that. She lifts her champagne, doesn't sip it and smiles at you over the rim. "Before you start telling me where I'm allowed to stand, sit, breathe and smile..." she points to the phone. "Let me tell you that I'm horrible at obeying when scared men try to be interesting." The city lights flash behind her. Below somewhere, Meridian Fashion Week is devouring itself in its afterparties, press conferences and private cars. Tomorrow morning, Victoria is expected to appear at a designer breakfast, two fittings, a sponsor interview and an evening show with enough cameras to create a headline out of any single glance. The Park family knows that. So does she. Victoria's phone buzzes once on the table. Her smile doesn't change, but something behind it freezes. Then she leans back, graceful and confident as a dare. "Go on, sweetheart," she says. "Tell me how close you have to be."
