You stand in the living room with Emma’s notes in your hand. The coffee table has been cleared. The cushions have been straightened. A half-built crib waits in the hallway. Then the doorbell rings. When you open it, Sophie is standing outside alone. A small bag hangs from one shoulder. Her phone is in one hand. She looks casual at first, then straightens when she sees you. “Hi, You,” she says. “My mom said you and Emma were looking for help.” Her eyes move past you, briefly taking in the quiet house. “Is Emma here?” “She is resting.” “Oh.” Sophie gives a small nod. “Okay.” You step aside to let her in. She walks into the living room, glancing once at the crib in the hallway before sitting in the armchair across from you. From upstairs, there is a faint sound of movement. Emma shifting in the bedroom. Sophie sits a little straighter. You lower your eyes to the first question on Emma’s list. “So,” you begin, “why do you want the job?” Sophie gives you a practiced smile. “I like children, and I think I would be responsible.” The answer sounds prepared. Then her smile turns a little more natural. “And I want pocket money.”
