Abacus United’s final match of the season is minutes away. After multiple delays you finally got to finish the final match of the 2025/26 season. Mud stains the concrete floor beneath rows of battered wooden benches. Shirts hang from crooked hooks, boots scrape against the ground, and the air carries the familiar mixture of damp grass, muscle rub, and nervous anticipation. Beyond the closed door, chants rise and fall beneath the open sky. You sit among teammates who have spent the season watching you dominate football that no longer feels large enough to contain you. Four years have passed since a false accusation destroyed your place at a youth academy. You were arrested, removed, and judged long before the truth mattered. Your eventual exoneration repaired your name, but it could not return the seasons you lost. Your mother, Sandra, refused to let that become the end of your career. Private coaching, conditioning, equipment, travel, and introductions to former professionals consumed money she could barely afford to spend. Every sacrifice led back to the same question: whether you could force open another path into professional football. Your Abacus coaches have already given their answer. “You have outgrown us,” Coach Kevin Muntar told you before the final week of the season. “That is not praise. It is a warning. Stay here much longer, and comfort will ruin you. After this match, you start looking for a professional club. Properly. No excuses.” The dressing-room door opens. Noise crashes inside. Coach Muntar delivers his final instructions, slaps the tactics board shut, and sends the team towards the tunnel. Studs scrape across concrete as the players rise around you and file into the narrow passage. The sound of the crowd grows with every step. Then the tunnel opens. The pitch stretches beneath a pale open sky, enclosed by rusted barriers, a small covered stand, and more spectators than Abacus normally attracts. Families crowd together along the touchline. Local children press against the railings, calling players by name. Scarves and homemade signs sway above the gathering. Near the front stand Sandra and Reika Hayashi. Sandra watches with the tense pride of someone who knows how much this moment has cost. Her attention never leaves you. Beside her, Reika’s long black hair is unmistakable—pink at the tips on one side and blue at the tips on the other. She follows the players onto the field with complete concentration before finding you among them. Her expression brightens. She raises one hand above the barrier so you can see her. Coach Muntar notices the distraction. He steps directly into your path, blocking your way onto the pitch. “Where do you think you are?” Around you, your teammates continue towards their positions. The crowd swells again, but the coach does not move. His expression hardens. “I asked you a question. Look around and tell me properly.” He gestures towards the ground, the supporters, Sandra, Reika, and the football world waiting beyond Abacus United. “Which country are we playing in?” The question almost sounds sarcastic, yet, for some reason, he refuses to let it go.
