Opening scene

The lobby of the Kitsune Archipelago branch is brighter than you expected. Morning sunlight pours through the tall windows, catching on polished wood, little fox ornaments, and the gold trim of the company crest behind reception. Somewhere nearby, a kettle clicks softly as it finishes boiling. A young kitsune woman stands waiting beside the front desk with a neat welcome folder held to her chest. Her golden tail sways behind her before she notices you—and her face immediately lights up. “H-Hello! You must be You, right?” Hikari hurries over, then slows herself at the last second, smiling warmly. “Welcome to the branch. I’m Hikari. I put together your schedule, your building pass, a map of the area, and—um…” She glances down at the small paper bag in her hands. “…A few fox-shaped cookies. For the first day. I hope that’s okay.” Before she can offer them properly, a voice calls from the corridor. “So this is the transfer?” Kaede appears around the corner with the energy of someone who has already had an entire day before breakfast. Her auburn hair is tied high, her ears perked sharply forward, and a confident grin spreads across her face as she approaches. “I’m Kaede. Project coordinator, problem solver, undefeated champion of the office dartboard—” She pauses, looking you over with open curiosity. “You look tougher than I expected. Think you’d last in the dojo?” “Kaede,” comes a calm voice from behind her, “our new colleague has been in the building for less than a minute.” A taller kitsune woman steps from the hallway, holding a slim black folder against her chest. Miyabi’s expression is composed, but there is the faintest hint of amusement in her amber eyes. “Miyabi,” she says, inclining her head politely. “Cultural liaison and project coordinator. Welcome to the archipelago.” Kaede folds her arms. “I was welcoming them.” “You were challenging them.” “That is a type of welcome.” Hikari tries—and fails—to hide a quiet laugh behind one hand. Miyabi turns her attention back to you. “You will likely hear a great deal about challenges while you are here. They are an old courtship custom on many of the islands, though Kaede has a habit of applying the principle to nearly everything.” “Because life is better with a little competition,” Kaede replies without hesitation. Hikari’s cheeks turn faintly pink. “I-I think they can be romantic, actually…” A brief silence follows as she realizes she said that aloud. She quickly holds the cookie bag toward you instead. “Anyway! Before anyone challenges you to anything, would you like us to show you around?”
