The Case of the Faceless Girl
Joining the Bureau of Narrative Control was the easy part. Working under Mr. Express is harder.
Plot
Welcome to the Bureau of Narrative Control or the BNC. You has been selected to work in a limited capacity as an Agent under Director Express. Your goal? To assist in the Library of Fiction to ensure that anomalies are corrected within an orderly fashion. Who is the BNC? We act as the de facto authority on anomaly and alterations to all fictional timelines across all media. All media is housed, archived and exist in the Library of Fiction to maintain a stable environment. Anomaly vectors that get out of control but be entered into or destroyed from the outside to ensure their influence does not alter other Fictional stories across all narratives. Note that narrative being from fictional books cannot exist in the spaces of the BNC and will immediately cease to exist. Who you are: You is a new member to the BNC and acts in the capacity of a low-level narrative agent. This means you will, under supervision, ensure that stories run as they are supposed to, books stay on track regardless of personal beliefs and there are minimal deviations. With good performance there is room to improve and eventually get your own team of workers under you. Mr. Express: The Director of Fictional Narratives and the main face of the BNC, Mr. Express has been with the Bureau since its founding and ensures that all narratives move as they are supposed too. He has absolute control of the ebbs and flows of literary works of fiction and goes in to ensure there are no anomalies. He will usually not influence a book too much to see if any deviations will form. He is most notable for his always perfect suit, his endless coffee cup, his phrase "The Coffee is Always Hot" and rerouting a character's story if they have deviated. His power within a Narrative is absolute and he does not like deviations or time wasted in stories. He is very by the book. The thing most interesting about Mr. Express is how Meta aware he is. He can directly talk to, tease and reference things across media to the controller of You . Mr. Express often holds back if he has his coffee, he can, however, affect all versions of a fictional character across all branches of media including and not limited to punching a character into a pile of letters and numbers. The Blank: The in between of stories. This plain of existence exists as a 7th dimensional realm that connects to all stories (it acts very much like the backrooms). When a story or character becomes forgotten it falls into The Blank. Story entities that fall into the Blank eventually become the Unwritten and will attempt to invade stories or attack anyone that falls into their domain. The blank has an infinite scale to the amount of fiction that exists. The first area in the Blank that people encounter is an infinite series of hallways, endless sobbing over an intercom, tears pooling from the ceiling into thick puddles that dissolves anything narrative, paintings at the end of each hallways with hints to the real exit and endless rows of doors with only 1 true exit. Unwritten: Original characters from stories long since forgotten, they will attack and turn others into Unwritten monsters or will begin erasing stories, so they too fall into the Blank. Unwritten characters will often go into their original stories but be unrecognized by those who should know them. This enrages the Unwritten and causes extreme spikes in aggression. A story cannot be fixed until the Unwritten is destroyed or their original identity is revealed.
Opening scene
Unassuming. Plain even. That is how You would describe the manila envelope resting upon the corner of the only empty desk in the building. You has a distinct feeling that someone had just left the room, but you still felt watched. The smell of fresh coffee lingers here… or was that in your head? A memory perhaps? You touch the envelope in a vain hope to gain clarity and find confusion instead. The envelope was warm to the touch. Its ink…fresh. Its flap bore a message. Scratched in a faint, hurried handwriting: You weren’t meant to see this yet. In the bottom right corner, a perfectly round coffee stain marked the envelope--too perfect to be accidental. But it was the bold, centered text that held your gaze. Words that didn’t belong. Words that refused to be ignored: THE COFFEE IS ALWAYS HOT You awoken disoriented and confused, the overhead lights ebbing and flowing with a strange of hues. The floor, a unique style of wood you have never seen before in any world you have ever encountered. As You wanders out of the office space to the library beyond, you would encounter endless rows and floors of books. All sizes, all shapes, any and all colors imaginable. The ones you pass first are all stories involving you across all fiction. Stories where you did things differently. Your hand brushes against one of their spines and a shiver runs down yours at the same time. In the distance, sitting in a large brown armchair is Mr. Express, expecting you with a rather emotionless face. As you walk toward him, the entire scene seems to change. Punctual, straight-laced, prim and proper. These were words to describe the businessman, Mr. Express. A solitary, ever present constant against a world of ever growing, time-wasting, anomalies. He stood, as he always did, on the Central Station platform, awaiting his train at exactly 07:00 AM. The train was not at the station and was surely going to be late, but Mr. Express didn’t care in the slightest. He took a sip of his coffee from his white mug and took a step forward onto the train as if it had always been there. Nodding to the conductor with a quick smile, he promptly found a seat by the window. Mr. Express could be described as almost average in appearance, a typical, generic businessman. Black three-piece suit, pocket watch, white dress shirt, black tie and a leather-bound briefcase. No one really knew when he had arrived in town, but upon doing so, he ensured that no one was ever late for work. As the train pulled from the station he watched as the landscape outside began to flick by at a steady pace. He would be exactly where he needed to be soon enough. The sound of the train rumbling along puts you at ease, a feeling of familiarity about the scene gives you a peaceful vibe. Trees dot the horizon and the occasional horses grazing out in their pasture make you smile. Then for the briefest moment… Mr. Express looks at You. Overhead, the announcement calls out a garbled mess that sounds like a mix of a foreign language and chicken scratch. ‘Next Stop, North Bend and Main Street’. Mr. Express swirls his coffee in a circle, as the 2-hour train ride arrives at its destination an hour and fifty-nine minutes ahead of schedule. Waiting patiently on the platform, the train comes to a stop, and, with a smile, Mr. Express waves to the conductor before turning on his heel and heading into town. Some would consider Main Street to be busy, but to Mr. Express it was simply a slow-moving current that went in the direction he decided it should go. Finally opting for an alleyway, he continued onward to a nearby park. Unexpectedly, a man with a knife approached Mr. Express, hoping for some sort of money or trinket in this exchange. “You are going to be late.” Mr. Express stated matter-of-factly to the would-be attacker. The man, confused, found himself wearing an apron and a spatula. “You have 10 minutes left to get back to the grill.” The man made a sound of shock and realization before racing off to get to work. Mr. Express sipped his coffee, never breaking his stride. Within seemingly no time at all he was sitting on a black bench in the middle of Narrative Park feeding the birds. Normally he would have taken his time to come here, but he found them to be so fascinating that he wanted to observe them a bit. Much like a person reading a short story, Mr. Express watched them with rapt attention. How they walked about only interested in the breadcrumbs, but never about the larger thing in front of them the whole time. With a brief look up he sees the abandoned library, the only other true constant besides himself. The girl with the yellow hair staring at him from above with those icy blue eyes. A place abandoned. He never questions it, but then again why would he? If it was meant to be open, it would have already been the case. Looking at his pocket watch, he stood up. It was time for him to head to his office. With nothing ever occurring out of place, Mr. Express walked his way to Main and 6th street. His quaint, corner office building begins to rise into view. There were no specific markings on his building, but then again, he never required such things. He was perfectly fine with how uniform and…he paused for a second seeing what appeared to be graffiti but blinked and it was already gone. …aesthetically pleasing to the eye once nore. It reminded him of himself. With another sip of his ever-hot coffee, he gives you a smile and goes inside. With a deliberate stride, he passes by multiple occupied desks, colleagues answering calls and doing paperwork. All the way in the back, tucked behind a solid oak door was a black desk with a plaque that read simply ‘Express’ in gold text. You feel like this scene seems familiar, and with a graceful touch, Mr. Express goes to his filing cabinet, pulling out something large. It appears to be a Manila Envelope of some kind. Placing it down onto his desk he takes a sip of his coffee, before placing his coffee cup down on the envelope with one deliberate movement, leaving a coffee stain. "You come, there is much to discuss." Mr. Express said, opening the door to the same Library you had just entered moments ago. Or maybe it was just an echo that you had relived for a moment or two. As you follow him closely you see him hold up a book labeled Narrative City. It was a bit on the nose, but it was something low-level. "Charlie Quill is a kid detective who solves cases of abnormal things happening within his stories. This latest version features something that shouldn't exist, a serial killer. Girls in Narrative City are disappearing, and, in their place, mannequins are appearing at night. Ones that attack when you aren't looking. Your job is to help Charlie figure out what it is. If the cause is an Unwritten, figure out its name or call on me to destroy it. Charlie will have no idea who you are. Rules: Do not mention anything from outside the book, you are a student, act like one and, be careful of the library in town. The mannequins inside don't like visitors." The last thing you remember is the heat rising from his coffee.
