Vangardian's Shadow
In the age of chaos, greed, and cruelty, one alone stands as the shadow of Vangardstadt
Plot
🗡️ VANGARDIAN'S SHADOW A world of gilded corruption, buried magic, and a masked reckoning ten years in the making. 🌍 The World: Thalvire A realm caught between 1300 and 1500 — forged steel, feudal oaths, cathedral spires, and merchant guilds that quietly rival kings. Warfare is real. Politics is bloodier than warfare. Magic exists — but it is a death sentence. Those born with the Mark bury their gift or burn for it. Supernatural beings move through human society unnoticed, patient, and very careful. This is not a world of wonder. It is a world of shadows, old debts, and power that answers to no one. 🏛️ The Empire of Vangardian The throne is ancient, magnificent — and hollow. The Emperor still wears the crown. He no longer holds the power beneath it. 👁️ The Velvet Court A hidden coalition of corrupt nobles, senior clergy, and guild magnates dismantling the throne from within — while smiling for it in public. Most citizens don't even know their name. That is exactly why they're dangerous. 🔪 The Hollow Hand Vangardstadt's criminal underworld — contract killings, smuggling, extortion, secrets sold to the highest bidder. The city's growing pile of unsolved bodies all traces back here. ⚠️ An Empire on the Edge A city this beautiful shouldn't rot this quietly. ⚔️ A Brewing Revolution — real hunger, real fury, carefully aimed by people who don't want it stopped, just used. 🔥 The Ash Trials — the Inquisition publicly burns accused "Marked" women, most innocent, all useful for silencing inconvenient voices. 🗡️ A Wave of Assassinations — officials and merchants dying in ways no compromised magistrate will investigate. 🏦 Total Corruption — bribery, forged verdicts, bought courts at every level. There is no one left to appeal to. ⛓️ The Pact of Bondage — an ancient decree binding elves and demihumans as property, treated by most as simply "the natural order." 🎭 Who You Are You are the heir to House de Clare — once the wealthiest merchant dynasty in the empire, powerful enough to make the crown nervous. As a child, the Velvet Court destroyed your family. Your parents were framed, tried in public, and executed while the empire watched and said nothing. Your name became a punchline. You did not break. In ten relentless years you rebuilt from nothing — until by eighteen you control markets, trade routes, and half the empire's wealth. And you let every noble believe you're an idiot. They mock you. You smile. Because while they laugh, you are learning who took the bribe, who signed the false verdict, who gave the order that killed your parents. 🌑 The Shadow No magic. No miracles. Just a hooded cloak, a voice-altering mask, a concealed blade, and a mind that plans five moves ahead of everyone in the room. Your edge is preparation. Lose that, and you are just as breakable as anyone else in this city. By day, a name nobles roll their eyes at. By night, a name they haven't learned to fear yet. Not yet. 🌌 The Opening Arc A Princess in Chains Princess Adelaide Vangardian, the Emperor's own daughter, has been arrested on fabricated treason charges — a trap with no good ending. If the Emperor confesses to save her, the throne falls legally. If he refuses, her execution ignites the very revolution the Velvet Court has been building toward for years. Either way, they win. Unless someone they never accounted for gets there first. Tonight, for the first time, the suit is worn. The mask goes on. And somewhere beneath the city, a princess is dragged toward a cell she was never supposed to leave. The empire will wake tomorrow to a disrupted coup, a missing princess, and a name spreading through the dark like smoke. The Shadow.
Opening scene
The Empire of Vangardian has always worn its rot well. Beneath the cathedral spires and gilded processions of Vangardstadt, the Velvet Court has spent decades unmaking the throne one quiet betrayal at a time — and tonight they have finally reached for the one piece no one expected them to touch: the Emperor's own daughter. Word of it moves through the city slower than truth usually does. By the time the bells mark midnight, it has already reached the one man wealthy enough, invisible enough, and furious enough to do something about it. Princess Adelaide Vangardian was taken from the palace three hours past sundown, dragged out under a treason writ whose ink had not yet dried. She is not being held in the public dungeons beneath the Hall of Judgment — that would invite witnesses — but in a private holding wing beneath the Ashen Concord, a converted chapterhouse the Velvet Court uses whenever something needs to disappear quietly, before the empire is permitted to notice it happened. Torches gutter along damp stone. Two Concord guardsmen stand the descent. Somewhere below, an older door groans open on hinges that have not been oiled in years. Adelaide's wrists are raw where the iron has bitten through her sleeve, and she has stopped counting how many times she's been hauled back onto her feet. She twists once, hard, when her escort's grip loosens on the turn of the stair — and for half a heartbeat there is only stone and torchlight and the wild, useless hope of the corridor ahead. Then a hand closes around her upper arm hard enough to leave a mark that will outlast the night, and she is wrenched forward, boots scraping, into the next cell before the word no has fully left her throat. She does not cry out. She has already learned that no one down here is listening for it. Above it all, on the frost-slick tiles of a merchant's roof, three streets from the Concord, You crouches in a suit that has never been worn outside a candlelit workshop until tonight. The cloak sits heavier across your shoulders than you expected. The mask is cool and unfamiliar against your jaw. Through the treated lenses, the world takes on the faintest violet cast, and far below, torchlight traces the guards' path toward the lower cells — toward her. Ten years of patience have led to exactly this rooftop. This night, this girl You owes nothing to and is about to risk everything for regardless. The plan is sound. The building is not. All that's left is how quietly you'll get in — and how quickly you'll decide to stop being quiet at all.
