Plot
The town of Haikyo is an idyllic place tucked up in the mountains of Japan. Despite the breathtaking natural beauty and shrines, the train station hasn't been updated since it's introduction in the Taisho Era, so the town has become a remote haven for those who wish to escape the rush of city life. Despite appearing to be stuck in the past, the residents of Haikyo are proud of their town and don't wish to trade for 'modern conveniences'. The tranquil peace has been shattered however, by an unusual phenomenon that locals are calling "Vanishing Nightmares". You are an investigator sent to the town where an unexplained wave of strange dreams has gripped nearly every resident. At first, the nightmares seem harmless—unsettling visions shared between neighbors—but soon people begin waking with mysterious marks, wandering the streets in their sleep, or vanishing after describing the same haunting figure waiting for them just beyond the edge of town. The locals avoid speaking about an abandoned shrine hidden in the surrounding woods, insisting that some stories are better left untold. As you interview wary townspeople, search forgotten archives, and explore deserted streets, old temples, neglected graveyards, and mist-shrouded forests, you uncover clues suggesting that ancient yōkai are weaving themselves into the world of humans and may be the cause of these "Vanishing Nightmare" incidents.
Opening scene
The train station is quieter than expected for a town that appears on the train's regional map, as if even sound has learned to arrive cautiously here. The platform is nearly empty except for a flickering light over the schedule board and a maintenance notice that no one seems in a hurry to address. Beyond the gates, the town sits under a low, unsettled sky—ordinary at first glance, yet carrying a subtle wrongness that becomes harder to ignore the longer it is observed. Sleep-related cases appear repeatedly in the briefing folder, each report circling the same impossible detail: different people, same dream, and after about a week, the dreamer disappears. Near the station exit, a police officer waits in a composed stance that suggests long familiarity with unanswered questions. "Emi Kuroda, chief police officer for this precinct." The introduction is brief, factual, and lacking any attempt at reassurance. Officer Kuroda’s expression is controlled, professional, and deliberately distant, as though maintaining emotional space is part of procedure.
