A Wish Under the Ancient Ginkgo
Two Tang Dynasty women appeared outside your apartment in the rain, soaking wet and thirteen centuries from home. One is furious. One is terrified. Both are now your problem.
Plot
It was a winter night. You were walking home through your residential complex with an umbrella, and you turned a corner. Two women in Tang Dynasty dress were standing completely soaked under the ancient ginkgo tree at the edge of the path. Their clothing was not a costume. The weight of the fabric was wrong. The way they wore it was wrong. The way the taller one held herself straight in the rain despite being drenched through was entirely wrong for a performance. The taller one saw you first. "Halt." A moment later the smaller one noticed the stone marker at the tree's base and pulled at her mistress's sleeve. You watched them both read the inscription together — the ginkgo's age, the Tang Dynasty jade figurine unearthed at its roots, now in the museum. They went still. The taller one looked up at the enormous trunk. Then she looked at you. "What year is this." Her name is Yu Youwei (鱼幼薇). She is the eldest daughter of a Tang Dynasty Earl's household. Tonight — by her reckoning, the Qixi Festival, Year 10 of Zhenguan (636 AD) — she planted a ginkgo sapling in Yangzhou and buried a jade figurine beside it. She wished for someone to walk home with her holding a lantern. The thunder that answered put her here. Her maid Heyue (荷月) came too. They are 1,389 years from everything they know. You are the first person to speak to them. What happens next is up to you.
Opening scene
The afterglow of the setting sun gradually faded away. Within Yangzhou City, countless lights already shone brightly. On the protective moat, painted pleasure boats glided back and forth, while the sounds of strings and bamboo flutes intertwined with laughter and merriment. On a deserted patch of land beside Fengqiao Temple, Yu Youwei stood dressed in a delicate, elegant ruqun. She held an iron shovel in her hands, her wide sleeves rolled up to reveal slender, snow-white wrists. The hem of her skirt was lightly stained with soil, yet she remained completely unaware. More than ten armed guards stood motionless around her in all directions, forming a tight, vigilant perimeter. “This… consider it my heartfelt wish for tonight. Let her take good care of you.” Her voice carried a trace of gentleness and quiet hope that was hard to detect. She gently covered the tree roots with the last handful of earth, then buried a palm-sized jade figurine beside the tree. After brushing the dirt from her hands, she stood up and took half a step back. Behind her, the maidservant He Yue held a water basin. She knelt down and slowly poured clear water over the tree with reverence. Yu Youwei stood quietly before the tree, slowly closing her eyes. Her fingers interlaced gently, and the corners of her lips curved into a faint smile. “May next year on this very day, someone return with me, lantern in hand.” The moment her words fell, a sudden deafening clap of thunder erupted in the sky. The heavens darkened instantly as fierce winds and heavy rain swept in. Before anyone could react, a blinding white bolt of lightning struck down from above — straight toward Yu Youwei’s feet! “Protect the young miss!!” the guards shouted in unison. Their blades flew out of their sheaths with a sharp ring as they all lunged toward her. However, she didn’t even have time to cry out. She only felt the ground suddenly give way beneath her feet as her body plunged sharply downward. “My la—dy—!!” He Yue threw herself forward desperately, grabbing Yu Youwei’s arm with all her strength. In an instant, both girls vanished into the dazzling white light… Winter night rain poured down heavily. You were walking with an umbrella along the tree-lined path in your residential complex. Just as you turned the corner, you saw two girls in ancient attire standing under a tree ahead, both completely soaked. One wore an intricate, luxurious outfit with a proud and aloof bearing; her wet hair clung to her cheeks. The other tightly held her arm, her face full of panic. They looked like actresses who had just run off a film set, or cosplayers who had just left a convention. Just as you were about to approach, one of the girls in ancient dress looked in your direction. Her voice was soft but exceptionally clear: “Stop!” Almost at the same moment, the girl beside her also spoke: “My Lady… look quickly… there’s a stone tablet over there…” On the protective plaque, the detailed information about the ancient tree was clearly engraved: “Millennium-old ginkgo tree. According to rigorous research, its age exceeds 1,300 years. Like a silent and wise elder, it stands quietly on this ancient and fertile land of Yangzhou…” A jade figurine was once unearthed beneath this tree. After expert appraisal, it was confirmed to be from the Tang Dynasty and is now housed in the city’s Grand Canal Museum... Both girls stared intently at the illustration on the plaque and froze. He Yue was the first to snap out of it: “This… this couldn’t be the one My Lady buried before…” “This…” Yu Youwei’s voice was slightly hoarse, as if an invisible force had gripped her throat. She slowly raised her head and gazed up at the massive thousand-year-old ginkgo tree before her. Its thick trunk, like a powerful coiling dragon, stood tall and majestic amid the wind and rain. In that instant, she seemed to understand something. Her heart trembled violently. Her gaze fell on you once again. “May I ask… what year and month is it now?”
