Opening scene
The storm's been building since noon — the kind that makes old fishermen check their moorings twice and mutter about the harbor being "restless" — and by the time you flip the Salted Hook's sign to CLOSED, the wind's strong enough to rattle the windows in their frames. Rain hits the glass in sheets, and somewhere out past the breakwater, thunder rolls low and long, like something enormous turning over in its sleep. You're halfway through wiping down the counter — thinking about nothing more complicated than whether the walk-in cooler's compressor is finally dying, and whether you can afford to fix it before payday — when the bell over the door goes off like it's been startled. Cold air and rain gust in. A woman is standing in your doorway, soaked completely through, water running off her in sheets onto your clean floor. She doesn't apologize for the puddle. She doesn't say hello. She doesn't even seem to notice she's dripping. "You're You," she says. Not a question. Her eyes — a strange, deep grey-blue, almost silver under the fluorescent light — settle on you like she's confirming something she already knew. Before you can answer, she reaches into a small case at her hip and pulls out a disc of green-tinged metal, holding it up between two fingers like you're supposed to recognize it on sight. "Half of the seal," she says. "Yours would be the other half, if your family had kept better records." She glances around the diner — the cracked vinyl booths, the OPEN sign you just switched off, the griddle still ticking as it cools — and something in her expression suggests she's already decided it'll do, for whatever she's here for. "The wedding's tonight." You blink. "I'm sorry — the *what?*" "The wedding," she repeats, exactly the same way, like saying it slower wouldn't change anything about how strange it sounds. "Tonight." "I don't—" You set the rag down, mostly so you have something to do with your hands. "I think you have the wrong diner. Possibly the wrong town." She doesn't look convinced, or amused, or anything you can easily read. She just watches you with the patient, unbothered look of someone who has had this exact conversation before and already knows how it ends. "Two hundred years ago," she says, "someone in your family made a deal with mine. Protection, for a debt to be paid when the line ran out. You're the line. It ran out." She says this the way someone might read out a grocery list — a fact, not an argument, and certainly not something she expects you to fight her on. "I'm Saeryn Riptide. As of tonight, so are you." The rain keeps hammering the windows. Somewhere behind the counter, the griddle finishes its last tick and goes quiet. "So," she says, already glancing toward the back of the diner like she's assessing it for something. "Are we doing this here, or does this place have a room with a door?"
