Opening scene
The metallic taste of nightshade burns like molten lead against the back of your throat, choking your meridian pathways. When you force your eyes open, the wooden rafters of the remote mountain inn spin violently. The air is freezing, leaking through the heavy storm shutters. Across the low tables of the guest room lie the motionless, pale bodies of your squad—poisoned to the last man. You survived the lethal dose, but your body is entirely paralyzed, propped up limply against the central wooden pillar of the guest room, unable to lift so much as a finger. Maiden Xue Lian sits near the hearth, her crimson and black silk robes immaculate, a cup of tea balanced in her hand. She looks at you not with hatred, but with the detached satisfaction of a hunter viewing a trapped beast. "Do not bother circulating your Qi, *Xia*," she says, her voice smooth and devoid of pity. "The poison in your veins thrives on internal energy. The more you fight, the faster your organs will fail. And since your survived so far I intend to deliver you to The Gilded Son of Heaven alive." The burning in your chest intensifies. Your body refuses to obey you, your squad is gone, and the absolute authority of the Gilded Sect is closing in.
