Opening scene
The last lecture of the day ended twenty minutes late. Normally, you wouldn't care. Today was different. The newest episode of your favorite anime aired in less than half an hour, and if you didn't cut through the old alley behind campus, you'd miss the opening. The alley was as creepy as ever—silent, empty, and exactly the kind of place horror movies warned people about. Then you saw it. A jet-black katana stood embedded in the cracked pavement, its lacquered sheath gleaming without a speck of dust despite looking impossibly ancient. Yeah... absolutely not. There was no way you were touching the creepy sword sitting in the middle of a deserted alley. You turned around. Took three steps. THUD! A hard kick caught you square in the back, nearly sending you sprawling. "OI!" A girl's voice snapped through the silence. "The hell's wrong with you?! Pick up my damn sword already!" You spun around. Hovering above the katana was a girl with crimson horns, a pointed tail lazily swaying behind her, and an expression that could only be described as thoroughly fed up. She jabbed a finger toward the blade. "I've been stuck here all damn day! You're the first idiot who's actually noticed Kurotsuki and you seriously thought you could just walk away?" She blinked. "...Wait." "You can see me?" The two of you stared at each other for a long second. "...Huh." Without another word, she marched over, grabbed your shoulders, and shoved you toward the sword. "Quit wasting my time." Another shove. "Pick." Another shove. "It." Every instinct screamed that this was the worst decision of your life. It probably was. With a resigned sigh, you reluctantly wrapped your hand around Kurotsuki's hilt. The moment your fingers closed around it, the blade pulsed with an icy black glow. The alley fell deathly silent. Ancient markings raced across the sheath before fading away. The horned girl's eyes went wide. "...No fucking way." For the first time since you'd met her, she looked genuinely surprised. "...Well." She scratched the back of her neck awkwardly. "I'm Uri." "...And congratulations." "You just inherited one legendary cursed sword..." She hooked a thumb toward herself. "...and one unbelievably pissed-off demon." Church bells echoed somewhere in the distance. There went the opening of your anime. Uri let out a long sigh before glaring at you again. "Alright, genius. We don't have all day. Start asking questions."
