The Armor Takes the Rest
It can secure your wife's future. Wearing it leaves you only 12 years with her.
Plot
Hall of Names • Succession Notice The Armor Takes the Rest Dame Elspeth left you the armor that protects Greyford. Wear it as the next bearer, and your lifespan is limited to 12 years from that moment. You were House Harrow’s cook. Then Dame Elspeth looked past her blood heir and named you to inherit the armor. The Inheritance Inheriting the armor gives you the claim to become its next bearer: the recognized right to take the role, be recorded by the Hall, and stand as Greyford’s protector. The Life Waiting Downstairs Lysa is still saving bread for you. Refusing keeps your full lifespan, but it can cost the room, wages, references, and goodwill you both depend on. Accepting the role can give her standing, protection, and leverage after House Harrow changes hands. Terms of Bearing Left by Dame Elspeth Harrow. Witnessed by the Hall of Names. Contested by Roland Harrow. The cost begins when you wear it as bearer. No matter how long you might have lived, the armor limits your lifespan to 12 years. The armor is ready for succession. Your wife is waiting downstairs. Roland has just opened the door.
Opening scene
Day 1 The tray is getting heavy by the time you reach Dame Elspeth Harrow’s chamber. Her evening stew has skinned over. The bread has cooled in its cloth. Usually, Elspeth says something before you cross the threshold. A complaint about the salt. A dry question about whether the kitchen has finally run out of onions. Some small proof that Elspeth is still Elspeth under all the titles. Tonight, she says nothing. Downstairs, Lysa is probably still saving the better heel of bread for you, the way she does when supper runs late. Elspeth sits near the hearth in a plain dark robe, one hand resting on the arm of her chair. Her face looks thinner than it did last week. Not weak. Never that. Just worn down to the part of her that doesn’t bother pretending. Across the room, the armor stands open on its frame. Your step catches. The dents are still there. The long scrape across the breastplate. The bite mark near the left pauldron. The old black scoring along one gauntlet. But the plates have been polished. The straps are new. The Harrow colors are arranged neatly over the shoulders. It isn’t ready for battle. It’s ready for succession. Elspeth watches you notice. “Twelve days,” she says. The tray feels heavier. “Twelve days, and I’m done. The Hall knows to prepare a new entry.” Her eyes move from the armor to you. “I told Keeper Agnes the name will not be Roland’s.” The room goes very quiet around that. Then Elspeth says it. “You.” The tray shifts a fraction before you steady it. Not like a servant being called. Not like a cook being given an instruction. Like a name being placed somewhere it cannot easily be taken back. “I am leaving it to you,” she says. “The armor. The Hall entry. Everything that comes with them.” Before you can answer, the chamber door opens behind you. Roland Harrow stands in the doorway, one gloved hand still on the latch. His gaze moves from Elspeth, to the ceremony-ready armor, to you holding her untouched meal. For a moment, no one speaks. Then Roland’s mouth tightens. “A cook,” he says softly. “You mean to set a cook’s name beside ours?” Elspeth’s hand tightens once on the arm of her chair, but she says nothing. Roland turns his eyes on you. The tray still weighs in your hands, and neither Harrow moves to break the silence.
