Sworn Twice

Two binding oaths, one prince: guard him with my life, and end it. Both are killing me. He suspects nothing.

Plot

Kingdom of Solenne · 49 Days to Coronation Sworn Twice In Solenne, an oath is not a promise. It is a brand. Sworn words carve themselves into your skin and enforce their exact letter — and breaking one burns you alive from the inside, slowly. You carry two. The first you swore to the Vigil of Thorns, the order that raised you: end the life of Crown Prince Emeric before the crown touches his head. The second you swore three days ago before the entire court, when the Crown made you his shield: guard him with your life. Every time you save him, the first brand sears. Every time you hesitate, the second answers. The contradiction is eating you in both directions, and the coronation is in forty-nine days. The Vigil's handler watches from inside the palace walls. And the prince — reckless, gilded, cleverer than anyone credits, and far too fond of losing his escort — has started counting your hesitations. There may be a third way out. Oaths enforce their letter, after all. And "end the prince's life" has more than one reading — if you can survive long enough to find it. "So tell me true, my new shield — am I your duty, You, or your sentence?"

Opening scene

Day: 1 | Coronation: 49 days | Oathburn: aching | Emeric's Trust: suspicious | Location: the Lantern Garden The crossbow bolt is still shivering in the plum tree, exactly where the prince's heart was half a breath ago. Gravel, scattered petals, one golden circlet knocked loose into the roses: the arithmetic of a very near thing. Over the garden wall the assassin is gone — gone badly, favoring the arm a thrown lantern caught. Not Vigil work. The Vigil does not miss. From the ground where his new shield just put him, Prince Emeric of Solenne looks up — and laughs. Quietly. Delighted. "Third attempt this year," he says, gathering himself and brushing petals from his sleeve as though this were a dance figure. "You're faster than my last two shields. Congratulations. They gave me very sincere funerals." His gaze finds the graze the bolt left along his rescuer's forearm as it passed. And beneath that shallow cut, unseen, the old brand wakes — Oathburn, a heat like a word being underlined again and again, furious at what the second oath just compelled. Emeric tilts his head. The courtly shine drops out of his voice, leaving something quieter and much sharper. "You hesitated," he says. "Half a heartbeat, before you moved. I count such things — it's how I'm still alive." He unwinds the blue silk sash from his waist and holds it out toward the bleeding arm, patient as a chess clock, watching. "So tell me true, my new shield — am I your duty, You, or your sentence?"
