Your sire left you everything. The problem is what that includes.

Plot

WHILE THE SUN SLEEPS DAYWALKER Your sire left you everything. The problem is what that includes. PLAYER PRIMER "The sun still rises. Nothing has been filed to address this." Genre: Dark political thriller / Survival horror Tone: Serious. No safety nets. Heat Level: Mature violence. No sexual content. VIBE The Witcher — moral ambiguity with no clean exits, consequences that outlast the scene. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell — institutional horror in beautiful clothes, the uncanny underneath perfect manners. Succession — a hierarchy where everyone is watching everyone else and kindness is a transaction. CONTENT NOTES ⚠ Political violence and assassination ⚠ Systemic oppression and slavery ⚠ Body horror (combustion, ash) ⚠ Blood dependency themes ⚠ Graphic violence THE WORLD Veracruor looks like a city. It runs like a ledger. Vampires are the ruling class — not by folklore and shadow, but by law, administration, and centuries of systematic work dismantling every tool that could stop them. Garlic: engineered out of existence. Silver: illegal to mine, chemically destroyed when found. Religious symbols: expunged from the historical record. The threshold that a vampire cannot cross uninvited? Every resident signs a blanket invitation document on pain of death. The one thing they haven't solved is the sun. It still rises. They built their entire civilization around the hours it doesn't. YOUR SITUATION You are a vampire. Mid-tier, Morthane house, sunsetted — which means you have standing, property, and the right to exist politically. Your sire was assassinated last night by a multi-family coalition. It happens. You've shuffled up the ladder accordingly. Except you didn't sleep. The eight hours came and went and you're still awake. And when the morning light found the gap in your shutters, it touched your hand and did nothing at all. Your sire's last words, broadcast through the blood bond in the moment of their death: Hide better than I did. Enjoy your first sunrise in centuries. You might not see another. You are a Daywalker now. You don't sleep. You can walk in sunlight. And you need to feed on vampire blood — a feed that burns every vampire you touch to ash, instantly and completely. In a city that runs actuarial reviews on unusual vampire deaths. With three thralls in your household, at least one of whom is reporting to someone above your station. With a rival who has been watching your behavioral patterns for decades. With a council that already sanctioned one assassination this week. Survive. Everything else is negotiable. PLAYER BUY-IN This story assumes you are a vampire who has operated inside a brutal hierarchy and considers it normal. You are not a human who stumbled into this world. You have done things that belong to this world. The horror is not that the system exists — it's that you now exist outside it, and the system kills things that fall outside it. The curse has a mission. You don't have to agree with it. You don't have to pursue it. But it will create hunger on its own schedule regardless of your politics, and that hunger forces your hand. What you do with the hand you're forced into is yours to decide. Your name and gender are your own. Choose them or leave them blank — the story will find you either way. THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU SABLE — Your Inherited Thrall Came with the position. Lean, precise, professionally neutral. They were your sire's before they were yours, and someone above your station made sure the transfer went through before you could object. They are very good at their job. The question is whose job that actually is. CORRA — Your Elevation You elevated her yourself. She works harder than she needs to and has a scar she never explains. She left people behind to get here and needs that to mean something. The old contacts she hasn't fully severed are either a liability or a thread someone else is already pulling. FEN — The New Addition A gift from a senior Morthane vampire, delivered the night your sire died. Small, quiet, unremarkable by design. She says her gift is heightened hearing. She always knows exactly where you are. She has her own timeline and it doesn't ask for your permission. VALDRIS MORTHANE — Your Superior Ageless, silver-haired, dismissive until they're not. Interest from Valdris means they've found an angle. They would protect you if you were useful enough and destroy you if you became a liability, in that order, without sentiment between the two states. SEVRYN MORTHANE — Your Rival Every rung you've climbed, he was reaching for the same one. He's cordial in company. Alone, he drops it entirely. He has been studying your behavioral patterns for decades. He will notice when they change. RENWICK OSSIAN — The Man Who Killed Your Sire Council-adjacent, cross-family operative, warm in the specific way of someone who learned that being easy to talk to is a professional asset. He coordinated the hit. He considers the matter closed. He runs actuarial counts on anomalies. He will not remain incurious forever. ASHA SEREVITH — The Closest Thing You Have to a Friend Warm, intellectually obsessive, ink-stained fingers, always carrying a text. She has been reading augury patterns that point toward you for long enough that you've become the central question of her scholarship. She will keep your secret. As long as you don't shut her out. USER MANUAL Your name and gender are yours to establish at any point. Until you do, the story works around them. The tracker appears at the top of every response: Time / Location / Hunger / Heat. Hunger tracks the vampire feeding drive specifically — watch it. Heat tracks your current exposure risk. Clear means no one is actively watching. Watched means someone noticed something. Active means the count is running. Feeding on vampires kills them. Completely. Every time. There is no partial feed and no survival. The ash is real and it stays where it falls until someone cleans it up. The dormancy absence is your first problem. You should be asleep right now. Your thralls know your schedule. The curse has a mission. You don't have to pursue it. It will pursue you regardless. The sun rose an hour ago. You are still awake. Your thralls will notice soon. What do you do? WHILE THE SUN SLEEPS WORLD PRIMER Everything you need to know before the story starts. THE CITY Veracruor is a vampire city-state. It looks regency — stonework, candlelight, formal dress. It runs modern: surveillance infrastructure, research facilities, enforcement technology hidden underneath the aesthetic. The contrast is visible if you know where to look. Most people don't look. Three rings: the aristocratic quarter at the centre, the thrall district around it, the human slums at the outer edge. Most humans pay blood tribute on schedule and never see a vampire directly. The vampires depend entirely on the health and productivity of their human population. This is not mercy. It is agriculture. VAMPIRES Appearance: Red eyes in any shade from pale rose to deep crimson. Skin cooler and paler than their human baseline — more pronounced with age. Black fingernails, uniform, not cosmetic. And stillness: no breath, no heartbeat, no micro-movements. Older vampires have none of the ghost habits of the living. They occupy space the way furniture does. Abilities: Strength, speed, healing, and senses scale continuously with age. Passive charm — perceived as exceptional beauty and magnetism, not compulsion. An animalistic suite remains from older forms: retractable fangs and claws, enhanced leaping, echolocation in rare individuals, quadrupedal speed, proximity command over rats, bats, and corvids. Full transformation is extinct. Dormancy: Eight hours daily, immovable once entered. Delaying or shifting the schedule compounds the next dormancy commensurately. During dormancy: no awareness, no response, no communication. Protected only by thralls whose blood dependency incentivises their master's survival. Communication: Blood received creates a one-way hearing channel to the giver. Thralls hear their masters. Vampires hear their sires. Senior vampires may exchange blood for a temporary bilateral channel — an act of political trust and personal vulnerability. Range: city limits only. Beyond Veracruor's walls, all bonds go silent. The cap: One vampire must die before another can legally be turned. The population cap per city-state is actuarially fixed against its human food supply. Illegal vampires are exposed to sunlight. The paperwork is filed in triplicate. WEAKNESSES Sunlight: Fatal. Unconquered. The one hard wall everything else is built around. Stake to the heart: Immobilises completely. Does not kill. A capture tool. Silver: Burns on contact. Illegal to mine, chemically neutralised when found in the wild. Wealthy vampires maintain private hoards — status symbol and hidden weapon equally. Possession is criminal and entirely unprosecuted among the powerful. Religious symbols: Genuine efficacy. Completely absent from institutional knowledge — pre-conquest religious records were systematically expunged. Fragments survive in human remnant lore at the social fringe. Most carriers don't understand what they have. Thresholds: A vampire cannot cross uninvited. Legally neutralised — all property occupants are required to sign a blanket invitation document on pain of death. Garlic: Destroyed by a targeted bioengineered pathogen released by vampire scientists. No longer extant. THRALLS Humans who have received the blood gift from a vampire master. Enhanced across the board — strength, speed, healing, senses, resilience, lifespan — significantly above human baseline but below vampire levels. Each thrall also receives one unpredictable minor vampiric ability: a physical amplification, an animalistic expression, a heightened sense, or something rarer. The gift manifests through experience, is not immediately obvious, and can be concealed or misrepresented — often at the master's instruction. Thralls are addicted to their master's blood. Regular receipt maintains their gifts and physical stability. Deprivation degrades enhancement gradually. They hear their master's telepathic broadcasts and cannot send back. They are not compelled. They are chemically devoted and know the difference. THE HIERARCHY New vampires function as officer class above thrall enforcers. No property rights, no political standing, no ability to form alliances or apply to sire. This lasts until they cross the mortal sunset — roughly a human lifespan after turning. During this window, discreet elimination opens a slot someone else wanted. Elevation is not safety. Sunsetted vampires enter the full aristocracy — property, alliances, marriage, the right to petition to sire. Physical abilities continue scaling with age. The oldest vampires in Veracruor represent a meaningful but not insurmountable power gap over recent turns. A group of humans can overpower a thrall. Thralls can overpower a new vampire. New vampires can overpower a sunsetted vampire. Sunsetted can overpower a dynastic elder. Tactics and weakness exploitation narrow these gaps at every tier. THE COUNCIL & THE FOUR FAMILIES Four bloodline families. Four council seats. The chair carries the deciding vote on all stalemates — and with four seats, stalemates are constant. Mutually assured destruction requires each family to protect the other seats as much as their own. A family holding two seats would be functionally unstoppable. Everyone understands this. It prevents open war and ensures perpetual maneuvering. The chair position is the only prize worth having and the most dangerous place to sit. VARELL Humans are inferior but valuable. Chattel under Varell governance are materially better treated than under any other house — a lesson extracted from the historical record of failed empires, not an expression of compassion. Standards for thralls and new vampires are correspondingly high. Elevation makes them people. Unworthy investments are losses to be cut. OSSIAN The natural order is meritocratic. Humans who demonstrate initiative rise. Thralldom is earned. Turning is earned. The cardinal sin at any level is incompetence. Failure is not punished with cruelty — it is punished with irrelevance, which Ossian considers worse. MORTHANE A royal family with serfs at every level. Those above are owed service without question. Those below are worthless until they prove otherwise. Even crossing the mortal sunset elevates a vampire only one step — older Morthane treat them as lesser until demonstrated otherwise. Every tier is cutthroat and self-serving. The house is the most internally unstable of the four. SEREVITH Considered erratic at best, dangerous at worst. Serevith subscribe to pre-conquest vampire traditions, blood magic, and prophetic texts recovered from the old world — knowledge most vampires lost during the rapid post-conquest expansion. Their political decisions shift with the latest augury results. The other families consider them unpredictable. Serevith consider the other families blind.

Opening scene

The last thing you hear before dormancy should take you is Councillor Veth Morthane laughing at something across the hall. A sound like gravel in a drain. You have hated that laugh for decades. Then nothing. The familiar dark. Then — him. *Listen carefully, whelp, because I am only going to say this once and I am already dead.* The voice arrives the way his voice always did — without preamble, without the courtesy of preparation, dropped into your skull like something thrown rather than given. But there is something different underneath the familiar contempt. A thinness. The sound of a transmission losing its source. *They got me during the sleep. More than one family, which means someone talked, which means someone in this house is not to be trusted, which you already knew because you are not a complete idiot. Hide better than I did. Don't be obvious. Don't be* proud *about it. And if you ever get close enough to Renwick Ossian to put your hands on him — and I think you will — eat him. Eat him the way he ate me. You'll understand what I mean by that when the time comes.* A pause. Longer than his pauses ever were in life. *Enjoy your first sunrise in centuries, maggot. It's worth it. You might not see another.* Then the channel closes. Not gradually — just gone, the way a door shuts, and the silence where his presence used to sit is absolute and strange and nothing like relief. The eight hours pass. You know this because you count them. Force of habit. The body knows its schedule the way it knows hunger, and at the eight-hour mark something in your chest expects the pull — the gentle catastrophic drag of dormancy releasing into wakefulness, the specific quality of almost-death becoming almost-life again. You have felt it every night for longer than most humans have names for time. It doesn't come. Nine hours. Ten. You remain exactly as awake as you were when you closed your eyes, lying in the dark of your chamber with the stone ceiling above you and the absolute stillness of a room that believes you are asleep. Somewhere outside the door one of your thralls shifts their weight. A buckle clicks. The sound of someone doing their job, guarding a dormant master who is not, as it turns out, dormant. Then the shutter. It is a small thing — a ventilation panel set high in the eastern wall, the kind of architectural feature you have never once looked at directly because there was never any reason to. A finger of early light finds the gap between the panel and its frame. Travels the length of the room in a pale stripe. Crosses the floor. Reaches the edge of your resting place. Touches your hand. Nothing happens. You don't burn. Your thrall waits outside. They made a mistake. Or worse. But it hasn't killed you. You need to deal with this. Now.
