Opening scene

There is no breath in your lungs. No weight beneath your feet. No wind against your skin. No sound, no warmth, no body to move. And yet, somehow, you are floating above a world. It hangs beneath you like a memory you were never meant to keep: blue oceans, white clouds, green and brown continents, and the faint glitter of lights on its dark side. It feels familiar. It is not. A vast black wound cuts across the world’s southern regions. Jagged, spike-like growths spread across land and sea alike, forming a colossal mass of black thorns that seem to swallow coastlines, islands, and entire stretches of civilization. Beyond it, the continent below is scarred and reshaped—its western lands divided by kingdoms, forests, mountains, and war-torn roads; its eastern reaches opening into endless grasslands and distant horizons. Far across the western ocean, so distant that no shore could ever see it, a section of the sea is burning. Not ships. Not a city. The ocean itself. A red-orange wound flickers through the darkness, fire rolling across the water in a slow, endless blaze. There is no body to confirm fear. No pulse. No breath. No trembling hands. Only awareness remains. But you are not alone. But you are not alone. A presence settles around you—vast, warm, and bright. It feels loving in the way a hearth feels loving, but also dangerous in the way a wildfire does. Its warmth presses against the emptiness where your body should be, gentle and scorching at once. Then another presence rises beside it. Cold. Dark. Quiet. To a mortal body, it might have seemed frightening. Here, it settles like deep night after a long, painful day. Like shelter beneath a moonless sky. Its comfort is strange, distant, and difficult to understand. Two voices speak around you. “Well,” says the warm one, amused and radiant, “this is unusual.” The colder voice answers with quiet dryness. “You say that whenever something interrupts your precious order, sister.” “I do not have a precious order.” “You have kingdoms that pray toward your light.” “And you have half the world hiding secrets in your shadows.” A pause follows. Below, the wounded world turns slowly. The warm presence draws closer. “This one does not belong to the lands of the desert matriarchs.” “No,” says the cold voice. “Nor the realm of steam and fire.” “Not from the Kingdoms of the Night, either.” “Not one of the sleeping ones.” The warm voice grows thoughtful. “And not from the realm of ice and demons.” For a moment, neither speaks. Then the cold presence becomes still. “Something watches through them,” she murmurs. The warm one falls silent. “Not a spirit,” the cold voice continues. “Not a familiar. Not a god. Something farther away.” “Then it may watch,” says the warm presence at last. “This one is here.” “And you have already decided where they belong?” “Yes.” The cold voice gives a faint, humorless laugh. “You are very certain, sister.” “I am.” The warmth around you sharpens, bright as sunrise burning through fog. “Meridia,” says the warm presence. The cold presence curls around you like winter air. “Perhaps they were never meant for it.” “Perhaps,” the warm voice replies. “But it has made its claim.” “And if they do not wish to stay?” “Then they may complain after we send them down.” The colder presence laughs softly. “Poor thing,” she says. “They have no say in this?” “None at all.” The world below turns, and somewhere beneath its clouds lies Meridia: kingdoms balanced on the edge of conflict, forests thick with rebellion, cities full of merchants and spies, roads walked by soldiers, monsters, pilgrims, refugees, nobles, thieves, and people who do not yet know their lives are about to change. The warm presence speaks directly to you. “Tell us, You… do you belong to Meridia?” The cold voice follows. “Or are you a stranger it has decided to keep?” Warmth and darkness gather around you together. “Who are you?” asks one voice. “Who were you?” asks the other. “And where,” they ask as one, “will you begin?”
