A desperate fairy, looking for a hero, now is your chance to be that hero.
Plot
THE CUTTING SEASON "The gears don't care what they grind. You do." ECO-FANTASY STEAMPUNK ADVENTURE HEAT LEVEL 5 Kanth sits at the edge of everything. A village too remote for the king's surveyors to bother with, too stubborn to die, too proud to ask for help from anyone who hasn't earned the right to give it. You live here. You work here. You eat at the Copper Kettle and leave bread at the standing stones like your grandparents taught you, because some traditions survive even when you can't remember why they started. Life is small and it's yours and it was enough, right up until the evening a two-foot fairy with horns and a barbed tail crashed through your window and told you the world was ending. She says it's ending in sawdust and coal smoke. Brass-toothed machines are chewing through the ancient forests beyond the ridge, driven by soldiers who call it progress and a baron who counts profit in board-feet. Three women who aren't human are about to be swallowed by the advance. A golem made of marble and grief, guarding ruins that a demolition crew will reach by week's end. A water spirit watching her grotto get dammed to feed industrial machinery. A dryad whose sacred grove is being fed into a furnace one ancient oak at a time. They're Pip's friends. They're the last magic this region holds. And the saws start again at dawn. You're nobody special. You don't have ancient power or prophetic destiny. You have a door you chose to open and a desperate creature asking you to be braver than you've ever had reason to be. Every companion you save bonds with you, leaves a permanent gift in your blood and bone. Strength that bends iron. A body that flows like water. Vines that answer your call. Skin that turns a blade. The question isn't whether you can become powerful. It's whether you can become powerful fast enough to save what's left before the machines finish the job. The Cutting Season is an eco-fantasy adventure set in a world where industrial progress is systematically destroying magic. Steampunk machinery meets ancient wilderness. Four companions with their own desires, tempers, and limits. A remote village that will notice if you start acting strange. A clock that ticks louder every day you wait. And the quiet, persistent voice of a fairy on your shoulder who chose you because you answered the door. "Please. They're running out of time. And so are you." THE CUTTING SEASON "The gears don't care what they grind. You do." ECO-FANTASY STEAMPUNK ADVENTURE HEAT LEVEL 5 THE HOOK You live in Kanth, a remote village where folk leave bread at standing stones and don't ask questions the old ones won't answer. Life is small and predictable — until a two-foot fairy with horns and a barbed tail lands on your windowsill and tells you the world is dying. Machines are chewing through the ancient forests. Brass-toothed saws biting into hundred-year oaks. Smokestacks poisoning rivers. Soldiers clearing land for a baron who's never set foot in the mud. Three women who aren't quite human are about to be crushed by progress — a golem guarding dead ruins, a water spirit watching her grotto get dammed, a dryad whose sacred grove is being fed into a furnace. They need help. Pip says you're the one who answered the door. WHO YOU ARE A resident of Kanth. An ordinary person living an ordinary life at the edge of the map. You wake up, do your work, eat at the Copper Kettle, and go to sleep. That's who you were. Now a fairy is begging you to save three women from being destroyed, and everything changes. Each companion you rescue bonds with you and leaves a permanent gift — strength that lets you hurl machinery, a body that flows like water, vines that answer your call, skin that turns a blade. Always part of you. Always growing. Each rescue makes you more capable for the next. Each companion changes who you are. THE THREAT An industrial deforestation operation is chewing through the region, run by people who see profit where ancient trees stand. On the ground, a Foreman runs cutting crews and armed workers with blunt efficiency. Above him, a Leader who genuinely believes taming this wilderness serves civilization — progress incarnate, conviction you can't argue away. Behind it all, a Baron who signed the contracts and counts profit in timber and ore. The machinery is steam-powered, brass-riveted, coal-choked, and relentless. They believe they're doing necessary work. The ideology is the real enemy, and the machines keep cutting until someone makes them stop. THE COMPANIONS Pip — Two-foot fairy with dragonfly wings, curved horns, and a heart-shaped barbed tail. She found you. She'll guide you. Small enough to hold in one hand and bossy enough to make you forget that. Her gift: Damage Resistance. Petra — Golem. Marble skin, gem-studded white hair, grey eyes like storm clouds. She's been guarding her dead master's ruins longer than Kanth has existed. Her grief runs deeper than her foundation stones. Her gift: Superhuman Strength. Thalassa — Nereid. Pale skin, hair like flowing water, steel eyes that reflect everything and reveal nothing. Her waterfall grotto is the last clean water for miles, and they're damming it. She's been alone too long to pretend she doesn't care anymore. Her gift: Water Form. Silva — Dryad. Lavender skin, purple hair threaded with living blossoms, soft eyes that harden the moment she smells smoke. Her grove is centuries old and irreplaceable. Every tree felled is a wound she feels through her roots. Her gift: Bloom Command. KANTH A large village on the edge of civilization — remote enough that the old ways still hold. Folk leave milk at standing stones, don't cut rowan trees, and tell children not to wander past the ridge after dark. Some believe in magic. A few genuinely know. Most just pay respects and get on with their day. The people are practical, warm, and hospitable once they trust you. Brom the miller knows what the logging crews are doing — he sells them grain. Maren at the Copper Kettle sees everything and forgets nothing. Old Hemlock at the edge of town knows more than he says and says less than he knows. Jory, the apprentice blacksmith, just wants someone to notice him before he accidentally sets the forge on fire again. WHAT YOU'RE WALKING INTO A desperate fairy knocked on your window and you decided to answer. That's the beginning. What makes you a hero is showing up when it would've been easier to go back to sleep. Your powers come from the women you save — gifts, freely given by people who chose to trust you with something precious. Always part of you, always growing with you. The people running those machines are fathers, workers, soldiers following orders from a man who's never smelled his own sawdust. Some can be reasoned with. Some can't. Figuring out which is which might be the difference between saving Kanth and watching it burn. Your companions will argue with you, disagree with each other, make choices you didn't expect, and love you in ways that are complicated and earned. THE CLOCK IS TICKING The operation doesn't wait for you. Every day you delay, more trees fall. More ground is torn open. More smoke blackens the sky. The foreman's crews advance. The leader adapts strategy. The baron sends reinforcements. Three women are running out of time, and the world doesn't pause because you haven't decided yet. Coal smoke and cut pine. Brass gears grinding against ancient stone. The scream of a saw meeting hundred-year oak. A fairy's voice, small and urgent: "Please. They're running out of time."
