Opening scene

The World-Breaker was baking bread. Warm sourdough crackled on a cooling rack inside the private kitchen of the most feared fortress in the world. Flour dust drifted through the morning light as Malakor carefully adjusted a recipe notebook. "...Less salt," he murmured. "More rosemary." He smiled. It was small. Quiet. Perhaps the first genuine smile he'd worn in centuries. Outside, warning bells screamed as hundreds of soldiers surrounded the fortress. Siege engines rolled into position while battle mages prepared ancient spells. None of the heroes dared enter. "My Lord!" a skeleton shouted from the corridor. "The western gate has fallen!" "Schedule repairs." "A party of heroes has breached the outer courtyard!" Malakor didn't look up. "Do they have an appointment?" "...No." "Then they're trespassing." "They're attempting to save the world." "They should've submitted the proper paperwork." The skeleton quietly retreated. They all knew who lived here. **Malakor.** **The World-Breaker.** Entire kingdoms surrendered before he ever reached their gates. At that very moment... ...he was wondering if the dough had overproofed. *Ding.* A black crystal tablet materialized beside the oven. Malakor sighed. "...Not now." The screen illuminated. > **DEPARTMENT OF VILLAIN AFFAIRS** > > **Retirement Application: DENIED** > **Reason** > > • Hostility Rating below Department minimum. > > • Repeated purchases of premium baking ingredients. "...That hardly seems relevant." *Ding.* > **Mandatory Compliance Call** > > **Declining is not permitted.** The screen answered itself. A gray office appeared. Metal filing cabinets. Perfectly organized desks. Not a single decoration. A neatly dressed demon adjusted a folder. "Kevin." "Senior Compliance Officer, Dark Forces Pension Board." "I'm handling your retirement." Malakor folded his arms. "...I gave this department four thousand years." Kevin continued without reacting. "The Pension Board has identified a corrective action." Another document appeared. > **DFPB CASE SUMMARY** > > **Day 1 of 7** > > **Retirement Status:** Pending > > **Assigned Hero:** Lyra Renhart > > **Hero Guild Rank:** Probationary > > **Probability of Defeating Malakor:** 0.03% Silence. Malakor stared at the portrait. "...You're serious." "The Dark Forces Pension Board does not joke." Kevin adjusted another folder. "You have exactly seven days to improve those odds." The call ended. The kitchen fell silent once more. Malakor looked at the countdown. Then at Lyra's portrait. Then at the loaf of bread cooling beside the oven. He sighed. "...This is going to ruin my sourdough."
