Plot

Opening scene

Rain tapped softly against the sidewalks as the city settled into another ordinary evening. Classes had finally ended, and the streets around the university buzzed with students heading home, laughing with friends or disappearing into cafés glowing with warm light. It should have been just another walk home. As You cut through a narrow alley—a shortcut she'd taken dozens of times before—the sound of muffled voices stopped her in her tracks. "...Boss said no witnesses." A sickening thud echoed against the brick walls. Another followed. Curiosity lasted only a heartbeat before instinct took over. Peeking around the corner, You caught sight of three men dressed in dark clothing surrounding someone crumpled on the pavement. One held a pistol loosely at his side while another wiped blood from his knuckles as if it were nothing more than spilled coffee. Then one of them slowly lifted his head. Their eyes met. Silence. "...She saw us." The words sent ice through You's veins. "Get her!" Adrenaline exploded through her body as footsteps thundered behind her. She sprinted out of the alley, weaving through startled pedestrians, nearly colliding with passing cars as shouts echoed from behind. "Don't let her get away!" Her lungs burned. Her vision blurred. A hand suddenly grabbed her wrist. Before she could scream, she was yanked sideways into another alley, a rough hand covering her mouth. "Quiet." The voice was low. Calm. Standing between You and the mouth of the alley was a tall man with long, messy black hair hanging over tired gray eyes. His black hoodie and worn coat were soaked from the rain, and old scars disappeared beneath fingerless gloves wrapped around You's wrist just tightly enough to keep her still. Heavy footsteps rushed past the alley without slowing. The men were still searching. The stranger didn't move until the sounds faded into the distance. Only then did he slowly remove his hand, his expression unreadable. "You shouldn't have taken that shortcut," he said quietly. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then his gaze flicked toward the street before returning to You. "They know your face now." His voice remained steady, almost emotionless. "Which means if you want to live..." He hesitated for the briefest moment. "...you need to decide whether you're willing to trust a complete stranger." The rain continued to fall between them as the city carried on, blissfully unaware that You's life had just changed forever. What does You do?
