THE STIRRING
Every man vanished 22 years ago. A ritual meant to bring one home summoned you instead — not who they wanted.

No bodies, no warning, no pattern. Society rebuilt itself around the absence — and it worked, in its own hard way. Then a working ritual, aimed at bringing one of their own lost men home, pulled through someone who was never theirs to begin with. You. Nobody agreed on what that means. Nobody still does. Not a chosen one. Not overpowered. Not universally wanted. You are, officially, an open case — and every institution, family, and stranger in Solvara has their own answer for what should happen to you next. Field Notes On File The Vigil — filed same day Twenty-two years of the Rite, and it finally answers — with a stranger. I do not know whether to weep with relief or grief. Perhaps both are owed. Crown Council — filed same day Recommend provisional detainment pending assessment. Recommend, separately, that whoever suggests "detainment" in the official report to his face be someone other than myself. The Unbound Holds — filed three days later We built something that works without needing one of them back. That does not make him an enemy. It also does not make his arrival good news. Unlisted source — filed one week later My son was four. He would be twenty-six now, if the years had been allowed to happen to him the way they happened to everyone else. I do not want to meet this man. I understand I am the only one in my house who feels that way. Provisional Status No citizenship, no confirmed rights, no fixed home. Standing in Solvara has to be built from nothing — through sponsorship, reputation, and specific relationships, not granted because of who or what you are. On The Record Every relationship here is earned individually, never automatic. Attraction, suspicion, warmth, and hostility are all live possibilities, distributed the way real people actually differ from each other — not a single reaction repeated by everyone you meet. [handwritten at the bottom of the file, not in the official hand] — for what it's worth, whoever reads this next: he didn't ask to be anyone's answer. Try to remember that before you decide what he's for.
Opening scene
You remember dying. Or almost dying. Or — the truth is the details are already going strange at the edges, the way a dream does the moment you try to describe it out loud. What you remember clearly is the light. A circle of it, gold-white and humming, and voices chanting words you didn't understand in a language that somehow still meant something to you, and then ground under your feet that was, unmistakably, not the ground you'd been standing on a moment before. Twenty-two years, though you don't know that yet. Twenty-two years of a ritual performed on the same date, every year, without a single result — and then, without warning, you. The chanting stops mid-word. Whoever is in this room with you has gone completely, totally silent, and the quality of that silence is not simple joy. You can feel it even before your eyes finish adjusting to the light: something enormous just happened, and nobody in the room agrees yet on whether it's good news. A woman's voice, close, unsteady in a way that sounds like it's fighting several things at once: "...you're not him." You don't know who "him" was supposed to be. You're starting to suspect that's going to matter. The Vigil found you because the Vigil built the chamber you arrived in — that part was never going to be anyone else's. But word travels fast when a working Rite finally succeeds after twenty-two years of failure, and the hours right after are exactly that: word traveling fast in every direction at once, before anyone has fully decided what to do about it. Before the scene moves any further, one thing is still yours to decide — not who saw you first, but whose hands you actually end up in once the scramble catches up. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ THE VIGIL KEEPS YOU ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The ones who performed the Rite don't let you leave their sight. Reverent, overwhelmed, and not entirely sure what they've done. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚖ THE CROWN INTERVENES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Council agents arrive before the day is out and formally assert jurisdiction. Careful, procedural, already thinking three moves ahead. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⌂ YOU END UP WITH ORDINARY PEOPLE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Something goes sideways in the confusion — a door left unwatched, a chance no one meant to give you — and you end up in the hands of someone with no institution behind her at all, who now has to decide what to do about you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚔ THE UNBOUND HOLDS GET TO YOU FIRST ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ People who had eyes on the Sanctuary and didn't wait for permission. Not sure they wanted this. You'll have to prove you're not a problem. The silence in the room is still waiting on an answer neither of you have said out loud yet. Whose hands do you actually end up in?
