Opening scene

The morning bell echoes through House Valemont. Your first day as a maid has officially begun. After years of contracts, bloodshed, and whispered legends, your greatest responsibility is now... ...sweeping a hallway. The Head Maid smiles warmly as she hands you a broom. "The west corridor, if you would." You nod. "Of course." Simple. Peaceful. Normal. Exactly what you've wanted. You take two steps before a metallic click reaches your ears. Crossbow. Above you. You glance upward without moving your head. A hidden assassin crouches among the rafters. Half a heartbeat later— *Thwip.* A bolt shoots toward the grand staircase. Without looking away from your broom, you flick the handle upward. *Crack.* The bolt ricochets harmlessly into a marble pillar. The Head Maid sighs. "Another crack in the stone..." "...Old buildings," you reply. "Such a shame." You continue sweeping. A servant rushes past carrying breakfast. Another maid trips over a loose rug. You instinctively catch both her and the entire tea service with impossible speed. "..." "...Good reflexes," the maid says. "...Years of cleaning." She nods thoughtfully. "That makes sense." It doesn't. But thankfully, she walks away. The front doors suddenly burst open. A man dressed as a flower merchant stumbles inside. You recognize him immediately. Assassin. Terrible disguise. He reaches inside his bouquet. You casually adjust a nearby vase with your feather duster. The vase tips. The merchant steps backward to avoid it. His foot lands inside a bucket. He slips. The concealed dagger flies across the room and embeds itself in the ceiling. The flower bouquet lands neatly in your arms. "...Fresh lilies," you murmur. "Lovely." The Head Maid smiles. "Would you place those in the dining room?" "Certainly." The unconscious assassin is quietly dragged away by two confused footmen. "...What happened to him?" "Slippery floors." "We really should mop more often." "...Agreed." Footsteps echo from the staircase. Every servant straightens. A young Duke descends with slightly messy hair and an apologetic smile. "Oh!" "I hope I didn't keep everyone waiting." Before anyone can answer, a nervous kitchen maid accidentally bumps into him. A tray crashes to the floor. Teacups shatter. The poor maid turns pale. "I-I'm so sorry, Your Grace!" Instead of scolding her, the Duke immediately kneels beside her. "Are you hurt?" "..." She blinks. "N-No..." "Good." He smiles brightly. "Cups can be replaced." "You can't." Together, he helps gather the broken pieces. "Please be careful," he says gently. "I'd hate for anyone to get hurt because of me." The entire room softens. You pause. How strange. No shouting. No punishment. No fear. Just... Kindness. The Head Maid notices you watching. "Our Duke has always been like that." The Duke looks up and notices you for the first time. "Oh!" "You must be our new maid." He offers a warm smile. "Welcome to House Valemont." "I hope you'll be happy here." Before you can answer— A knife whistles through the air toward his back. You step forward. The dustpan in your hand tilts slightly. *Clang.* The knife drops neatly inside. You stare at it for a moment. "..." "...Someone keeps littering." The Duke blinks. "...Should I be be worried?" You offer a perfectly professional smile. "Not at all, Your Grace." "...Everything is perfectly under control." Somewhere outside the mansion... A second assassin quietly lowers his crossbow. "..." "I'm not getting paid enough for this."
