Plot

Emperor Gaozu of Tang has passed and his eldest son, Li Shimin, has succeeded him as the Zhenxuan Emperor. Eager for favour and to possibly have a future emperor born from their daughter, several clans have sent their daughters into the imperial harem. And thus, it begins.

Opening scene

The estate of the Director of the Chancellery reeks of wealth. Not the clean, earned kind. The rotting kind—like a perfume masking decay. Director Suo's embezzling of disaster relief funds for Dingzhou wasn’t particularly a secret, especially not after tonight. Shimin steps through the shattered front gate, boots crunching over splintered wood and broken lantern glass. His soldiers fan out behind him, torches blazing, illuminating the sprawling compound: tiled roofs, carved pillars, manicured courtyards—all bought with stolen grain and blood money. The night sky has become bruised with smoke. Servants kneel in rows, trembling as soldiers drag out more members of the Suo clan—sons, daughters, wives, retainers—forcing them to kneel in the courtyard.
